Looking to get rid of my desktop and screen and go to a laptop in the next week or 2 so would appreciate any feedback or ideas

Will need to be a decent spec, mainly use for surfing the web but also for some online gaming and some work as well.

Been looking at a few of the Sony ones as i do like them but TBH not too concerned what make, read a few results and the Acers although being a budget brand seem to get pretty good results?

Looking to spend around the £700 mark poss more if its worth it.

Also will be looking to sell my PC on so hey if anyone has a top spec laptop and wants to do a deal let me know ;)

Many thanks

Mike

For £700 you should get a fair bit of laptop! Mate of mine got a deal recently on a HP one, pentium m 1.6GHZ, 512 MB RAM, 60GB HDD, DVD-CD RW, build in wifi (centrino), 3x USB, TV Our, combo drive, printer, carry case, mouse - £695 + VAT (unless you can get vat back, my mate did.

http://www.laptopshop.co.uk is also a good site and they are pretty good...

don't buy a dell or a packard bell! i used to work at dell then moved to microsoft 4 years ago. depending on what type of games you want to play you may want to reconsider getting a laptop, no matter what an oem says laptops/ notebooks are not designed for gaming, plus though you can upgrade some laptops its not easy and very rare you'll be able to! if your talking minesweeper then you'll be ok. dabs etc sell a good range and pc world do a good price match thing at the moment though for a price comparisson the laptop you find has to be within 20miles of the store. might be worth looking through the local papers and seeing if anyone locally has a reconditioned unit as their usually the cheapest route. hope that helps in some way.

ACER do a desktop replacement laptop. It is a bit big to be truly portable but small enough to put away when not in use. I got one that had a hell of a spec and has been used to play all of the latest games but the missus now uses it as I got an ACER Ferrari AMD 64.

I agree, never buy a DELL...

true but games unfortunatly move faster than the strangle hold we have on the hardware and the result is that within 6 months a new game will be release that though it may run on the laptop will either have to run drop frame or with reduced texture mapping etc etc and then you end up stuffed, you'll find it very rare to find a laptop with a really powerful graphics card. but like i always say when your looking for a pc of any form then you have to look at exactly what you need it to do and buy one that does that! most people who us a pc us it as a gloryfied word processor with a bit of internet access so they don't need the power, if it's games you like then grab an xbox and router so you can still play online and if its just internet then thier are so many simple isp, sky, cable or even iphone options to choose from! so you could get an old laptop for £100 locally that'll do you for word processing and internet, £100 xbox and you'll be left with £500 to spend on the zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. which is the best option all round.

SONY VAIO. I have had this for a few weeks and its fookin brilliant. wireless internet and if you go to PC world you can buy now and pay next year. The screen is absolutely excellent and the spec is great. 1 Gb ram. 1.73 Gb processor. G force video 6200. only got a 40Gb HD but hey! its a sony.

Its not quite as fast as my PC but not much slower. and thats a 3.06 Gb P4 with 1.5 Gb ram

i'd go for a small form factor pc if you use it a lot, working from a laptop for extended periods does my brain in

A good reason for going to a desktop replacement laptop such as the ACER Aspire 1700 series...

The AMD 64 is pretty good and in a lot of cases outdoes the Intel P4...

Yep heard that said .. but my CAD program tells me to "Please install an Intell CPU" when you start it .. Also Cubase doesn't work and I've had problems with Photoshop CS2 .. The choice is your !!!!

But the AMD is better for floating point..i.e. games and graphics..

Look on Ebay. There are hundreds up for sale of everymake, even high spec ones go for less than £400. Been looking for one for my wife for Xmas!

If you do buy a SFF PC make sure you read up on them especially if it's a Shittle er I mean Shuttle!

A good place to get a laptop can be Lidls on occasion, a friend got one form there for £800 but it's as and when they have the offer on

I'd guess that the laptop would be faster at most things other than games, and I'm only saying it's potentially slower in games because I am assuming you have a better graphics card in the desktop. The main reason it feels slower in is the hard drive in it is slower than the desktops due to power/heat/size restrictions.

I think you have got bigger problems than your CPU, try a format!

Laptops now are getting good and coming with good graphics cards. The desktop replacements come with GeForce 256MB cards, 1GB RAM and good hard drives. Most desktops have 7200rpm drives and these are now making it into laptops....

Kirbz if you find an HP one you fancy let me know bud. Can get very good prices from our supplier, worth a quote. Sony IMO you pay for the brand, and as said SFF's can be a real PITA!

I wasn't suggesting a Shittle .. iDEQ is a far better unit. The CD rom covers crap cause when open you can't switch the machine on, but the machines work well and look good as well with there SS effect

I didn't like the look of it so after doing a hell of a lot of checking up built my dad a ST20G5, needed a minor upping in voltage on the northbridge but that aside it seems to be a good one

Boot to safe mode to rip out the motherboard drivers, clean up the registry and hope for the best is how I normally do it.

Failing that and a big enough HDD to put all me porn on while I reformat the OS drive I use partition magic and make a 10-20gb partition, put the new OS in the new partition and manually delete the old one from what is now storage space.
