My 15yr old "hoodie gangster" nephew is IMO addicted to fruit machines! Anyone any experience of this? He works part time but has now started to borrow off friends etc to feed this habit. This has only just come to light and I understand the usual habit buzz etc but any advice on how to deal with it would be welcome.

AND yes I know breaking his fingers would stop him pressing the nudge buttons but I'm after helpfull advice:D

A mates son was the same, so, he took a chance and bought him a pretty new fruit machine for his bedroom hoping that he would get bored of it.

He actually did get bored off it, but he also managed to save up the £250 that the machine cost his dad and pay it back.

Not saying thats gonna work for all, but it did for him.

HTH

mmmm, i was thinking that aswell. Problem is I think its the money that grabs him not the playing. He sneaked off today and was on one at NEC, put in 2 quid won 25!!!

my friend has a serious gambling problem, horses, roulette wheel, fruit machines etc

so he built his own office kitted out with 3 fruit machines,he is now sick of using them, and rarely goes out to gamble, like me i just stick a twenty on the footie at the weekend,i guess with time you can control it,and know you never win in the long run when you gamble

A mate of mine went on a year long fruity bender and lost about £4000.

It's hard to tell kids though - would you have listened at 15?

Difficult to know what to suggest - maybe burn the soles of his feet with a hot crack pipe?

LOL, harsh but fair! Maybe he will grow out of it, if not crack pipe it is:D

ive got no advice but try aand nip it in the bud, ive got a few mates that when leaving school they took a copuple of months out and ended up at the bookies

i took a y.t.s, im now a fully qaulifed plumbing and heating engineer with a zed, a fiance, a house and money in the bank

they are still going to the bookies rolling their fags loosing a hundred quid and winning a tenner then thinking that its been a good day

Dont know how but you need to nip it quick

My missus worked in a casino in blackpool, and the stories shes told me are pretty scary, people loose cars houses and families on the turn of a card, they would go in on pay day and loose thier wages before they even went home. I was lucky, I used to like a night in a casino, I remember 1 night having almost spent my 'gambling budget' and having a fiver left, thinking to myself now i can get a taxi home or i can go back on the blackjack and walk home, then i stopped dead in my tracks....At no point did i think i was going to win, I realised i was just throwing away the money. Never been in a casino since!! The way i see it youve got 3 years before he's allowed to do some real damage in a casino or bookies, Good luck mate

My missus works for a company emptying these things and believe me theres only one winner , the brewery,s, In some pubs the takings off the machines actually keep the pubs running !!. She can count anywere from 5 to 20 THOUSAND POUNDS a week, all her employer gets is the rent for the machine the brewery gets the rest !!!

29 now and been addicted to fruities and roulette since i guess i was around 13/14, i must have piled thousands into other peoples pockets in all that time! the only thing that stopped me was being given a clapped out old fiat turbo when i was almost 16, then my brain had to struggle with either putting the tenner in the fruitie or getting that new indicator bulb etc.... though this only worked when i've had a car, when either due to finances or accidents i've been without a car i've pretty much been straight back on them, i know this is of no really help but i guess what i'm saying is you have to find what else it is that interests him then help him enjoy that fully and if he's anything like i was (though back then you got 2 goes for 10p on bournemouth pier) he'll get distraced from the lights and learn to love the smell of engine oil on his t shirt

My son would gamble on anything. So I took him down the pub for a game of pool. I let him win the first game so he said lets play for a pound & I said no if you want to gamble I will play you for £5 a ball Cost him £60 out of his wages that week & he had worked very hard for it. He does not gamble now. But I hade to do it to him.

Tell him to learn the reels mate, oh and I know a cool trick on some of the fruities. If after a few nudges they hold, hold the lot and hit the cancel button then start and you'll get the jackpot! LMFAO :D

its a hard one, i played the slot machines from when i was 10 as i live in a sea side town and got that bad that my mum & dad used to drive down there most days pick me up and take me back to school!! and when i think of the money i put in them!!

I think the only real thing you can do is try to get the places to stop letting him in, worth a try

Thanks guys. AND trust you Timmy! He knows the tricks OK, I mean at the NEC he won 30quid on a 2quid investment! He's intelligent when he's interested but will be lucky to get any passes in his exams. Interesting idea by Neil!!!!! (quick make it a sticky) LOL  ;) Give that one some thought.

Thing is they shouldnt let him in in the first place as you have to be 18 to use them.

You could say to them, that he is fifteen and if he is caught paying on the slots again, they will inform the police or the commision who are incarge of fruit machines.

Take him to a bookies in a rough area and give him a pocket full of 50ps, hell soon get the message when all the dossers ask to borrow 50p to gamble it on a horse . I went with a m8 one day and saw guys losing there wages etc and crapping themselves that wife was gonna find out. Put me of gambling for life, never placed a bet and never going to.

ALTERNATIVE

Teach him poker, if he gets good he will win. 75% skill and 25 % luck and a lot more to win. If hes gonna gamble he may as well gamble with the odds in his favour "if he learns hat is".

Hell probaly grow out of it anyway, get him a tart. Heel be savin like a bitch in a week !!!

just watch he doesnt start on the 888 website ....on line gambling ..how do you try and protect him from that.....?? by the way there is plenty of good information on this subject at gamblers anonymous ...give them a call they will be sure to help or give advice ........good luck Roy
