Hi everyone,

I've only just noticed this, although I guess it's possible it's always been like it and I've just been particularly unobservant. I can easily waggle the gearstick from side to side when the car is in gear (any gear) almost as if it were in neutral. There's no problem with getting the car in gear or changing gear though - all seems to be working fine. But just the stick feels a bit on the loose side.

So first off, is this normal? If not what's likely to be the problem? I did a quick search of the forum and saw some posts mentioning bushes, but TBH didn't really understand what people were talking about. And obviously, if there is a problem what do I need to do to fix it, and how much is it likely to cost roughly?

Thanks everyone,

Bart

Allrighty... just found this:

on another post. Sounds like the solution for the problem I'm experiencing. Anyone know the best place to get the bits from?

Also, do you think it's worthwhile fitting a short-shifter whilst I'm at it? Does it do any good for the car or is it purely aesthetic / helpful for quicker gear changes on the track?

Cheers,

Bart

Bart,

To save you alot of hassle then if our planning to change the clutch or maybe sticking in a lightweight flywheel then its alot easier to change the bushings when the gearbox is off. Hva ebeen told its a very fiddley job to do from the inside of the car.

Sounds like a good excuse for a flywheel:D

more than likely bushings and should not take no longer than 1hour to do from inside cabin, there is a bolt that is upside down with a sheered face which makes it difficult, you might find the clutch has been done before and the bolt has become loose, which fastens the linkage

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. It does seem like the kind of job I can do myself without too much hassle so I'm going to do as Pete suggests and order some bushes from MJP. Not so sure about the short-throw stick at the moment, but I am going to take the opportunity to get a new gearknob because my current one is awful.

Cheers,

Bart
