I know want to upgrade the main dash lighting to the same bright blue scheme.

I've been searching for the thread posted some time ago, linking to the SXOC where someone there did theirs, but couldn't find it.

So I looked on the SXOC forum directly, and found it, so I thought I'd re-post it up again,

Should be able to get this mod done over the winter and post some pics, unless anyone has already done this and cares to post their findings?

And so as to help people looking in SEARCH mode, some keywords..... LED, Dash, Lights, mod, bulb :D I think that should cover it!

All the best mate. I've been meaning to do this for a while as I think it looks great, but haven't got around to it yet. Sounds like the ideal project for a cold winter's evening though. Post some pictures up when you're done.

FYI - With the Speedo dials lit up with blue LED lighting, the red/orange needles are not going to show up very well at night, as the blue light will have trouble travelling through the needles.

Im looking to do the same, with blue lighting, but every pic I've seen shows the Needles barely visible if visible at all at night :(

where on the LEDS needed on that site i cant find them

I think this will be my next mod...

the one think i dont like, is the clocks at night, they are just boring.

e bay seem cheap too for the 501's

Nice one, now who's had there dash apart and made a list of what we need :D

I believe its 5x 501 Type bulbs.

;) my dash has a switch which can change to blue or green when wales meet is sorted your more than welcome to see which way they done this  the dash i mean can change colour not the switch lol

how about changing colour leds i had them in a previous car faded through 7 different colours (chavish i know ) but looked kind of cool!

WOo, I've done this but with white LEDs. Not too sure why I did it now that I've got indglow dials...!! >

Right guys I've just had my dash out, and done some checking up.

There are 4 x 501 bulbs on a standard J-Spec dash (I beleive the UK is the same) The 5th 501 is for the charge illumination, so you don't want to be changing this one.

As for the blue illumination of the red needles, there are 4 smaller bulbs infront of the dash that illuminates the face up. So you have rear and front illumination on our dash! Also the 501 bulbs have a blue rubber mask over them, so they already show up with a blue tint, as also do the 4 smaller ones in front, so i cant see there being a problem, atm! :D

Anyway I've orded 5 x 501 LED's anyway, as I'm going to put one in my auto gearbox leaver, as the 501 in there is crap, and doesn't show up very well at all.

Will keep you posted once the new LED's turn up and I get the dash back together later this week.

would love to see how this turns out, ,, toying with idea of indiglows dials and dash , if this looks good enough will do same, ,, good luck

Right, LED's turned up this morning in the post, and I've put them in. I've taken a few pics of what to take off to get the dash out etc, and will post a how-to later.

As for how bright they are and whether you can or can not see the needles I'll post tonight after it's dark and I've got back from work.

EDIT*** There are 6 501 bulbs on the rear of the dash, and not 5 as I put on the post above on this thread :headvswal , but the two that you don't want to change are the charge (as I put originally) and the 'Low Fuel' as these both want to remain clear, to show through the appropriote filters.

Not brilliant photos, but you can see the difference, first one is with the dimmer on full, the second one is with the dimmer on it's lowest.....

Sorry for the crap quality, these were taken on my phone

Full 'How-To' with better pics coming soon. :D

They look quite dark on the photos, are they hard to see in real life?

And i thought it was just my monitor!! :D

Nope, they give off a very good light, even on dim, not as bright as the side pods, but then you don't want that sort of brightness right in your face. The red needles show up fine, not hot spots either. I used THESE in the end. They seem to give a more even light, saves on the glue gun technique as well.
