Been off-line all weekend due to my own in-competence!!!!! :headvswal

Using LimeWire Friday evening, I was trying to download Star Wars Lego for my lad, well that'll teach me not to try that again :mac1: Totally F****D my PC up!!!!!

I now spent all weekend re-booting the whole lot :headvswal I did manage to get it into safe-mode and retreive all my photos (that hadn't already been saved), but I've lost all my videos (although most are still on DVD), all my music........... but the most important, I've lost all my Favorites on the net!! :(

So I'm a little happier this morning, as I'm now back up and running, although I've got a lot of updating to do.

Don't ya just hate it when that happens :(

Mind you, it's not usually 'Star Wars Lego' that causes the problem ;) :x:

You souldnt not have lost them your favs or files.

Depends if he formatted or now, but if you just installled windows over the top, i agree, you should have retained all files, settings and favourites etc.

theres a lesson to be learned here, don't use shitty p2p apps like limewire ;)

I presumed he didnt as he got his mp3 and a few other things.

And Clarke is right. Its a lesson to not trust P2P too much, and make sure your firewall and virus checker is up to date.

Never seen the point of installing XP over the top of XP...it is ok to get you back up and running to revocer data but always do a clean install afterwards...

P2P is ok for somethings like music but never download anything executable from it...

I'll explain a bit more.....

Before I formatted the hard drive, I managed to get into Safe Mode and recover my (previousley) unsaved photos and some other stuff. Then i did a fresh install and started all over again.

I did have Norton and AVG running (both up to date) and my McAfee firewall wass running fine. What seems to have happend is that the file I downloaded was full of viruses, but for some reason whan I opened it neither Norton or AVG saw these, and allowed them to infect my PC. :headvswal I take full blame, as it was entirley my fault.

This has been a lesson learned, that I won't trust p2p program sharing anymore, but I've never had any problems with p2p video downloads, except for porn disguised as a different movie... Why do people do that?

Anyway, my only problem now is that BT have done some work in our local exchange, and managed to fook my broadband speed up :headvswal

good old BT...customer service, what's that?

I would get rid of Norton. Their service has got terrible. I got infected with a virus and I found the infected file on my computer. I went out and BOUGHT the latest norton, installed, updated and it didnt find it. I Emailed norton and sent them the file saying its a virus. A few days later I got a reply saying they knew about the virus and a fix will be availible in the next patch release. I emailed asking when that was and was told in about 2-3 weeks.

I got AVG and cleaned the file for free.

Downloading from Limewire should be OK, just scan the directory it saves in every time you download something new.

No firewall \ AV suite catches everything, Norton is ok 99% of the tme but typically the one time you need it...it happens....
