Does anyone know if.........

I know technicaly this is a tech question but.....

Will US tension rods fit a UK Z?

I was looking at

THIS and was wondering if it would fit on mine. The tension rod bushes need replacing and this would make the handling better and also have no need for the bushes again. It is also only a little more expensive than the bushes, which I have been told cost £100, and I presume that is for 2.

Whats your view?

Stuart

Well I've checked between the Euro FAST CD and US parts fiche, and the part numbers are identical, so I'd say yes..

But where did you get £100 from? Let me guess, Nissan main dealer who will only sell you the entire rod?

You can get Graphite Injected Polyurethane (race) bushes for under $50 from Courtesy, and I believe http://www.suspension.com sell full Poly bushes for them too for a lot less than £100..

I'm sure someone like Luke/Johnny could source them..

If you do get the adjustable rods - you'll need a full alignment from a (very) competent alignment shop afterward remember..

I got rose jointed tension rods fitted by SE,they make one hell of a difference wink.gif.When Johnny drove my car it was the first thing he picked up on,and Johnny boy has driven lots of Zs. eek.gifWOW eek.gifhe said, the way the car steers is the bollocks biggrin.gif.

MAC, how much did they cost you? At the moment these are costing about £110 plus shipping which will be about $70.

Where did you get them from, cos I dont want to import them end up paying whats gonna be about £175ish for them then find out I can get them from here for aprox the same price.

SE's catalogue price is currently £224.95, which, I think, is marginally less than a pair of pukka Nissan wobbly ones. They make their own and are steel rather then some which I believe are ally. This will make them a little heavier, but probably stronger.

£110 seems pretty cheap for a pair, or is that US$ each ? Have you spoken to Mike at MJP, as he imports the Stillen ones.

No they are $155 which is about £110 for the 2.

Why not just replace the bushes ?

Its not that big a job?

I could tell you a little secret, SE take the standard broken ones, cut the ends off and then put new fittings on the end. Of course that is the easy part, getting them setup right afterwards is the tricky part.

Get the set up wrong and you'll not only pay in handling but tyre wear too. Could be a very expensive lesson.

Hands up how many people actually understand the complexity of suspension geometry?

Or, more importantly, who has the equipement to set it up properly?

The Superflex poly bushes cost about £50 a pair delivered to you. Just done the other side on mine on Sunday. Not a hard job. See Tims earlier advice and Warrens. But just a thought on the rose jointed Stillen types - Sure they're going to give the most accurate feel but after 2 weeks of salt and grit on the roads weeks like recently I wouldnt think they'll last long term under our winter road conditions. Maybe if yours is a track only car or summer miles! Also you have to remember that UK roads are becoming shit fit only for 4X4s. If you take away the compliance that poly or rubber bushes allow you have no give when you hit a pothole. If you're on 17" 18" or God help you 19" your gonna end up with rims like 20p pieces. Maybe not the same risk on higher profile 16". Maybe others have different views on this.

Stuart I got my rose jointed from SE,I guess Andyp knew that wink.gif and he is correct in saying they cost less than the crapy nissan stock ones that leak,No I said that he said they cost less biggrin.gif.Mine have been fitted for a year now and they are not rusty, SE QUALITY biggrin.gif.If you want the poly ones try here www.zcentre.co.uk

I'm not suggesting the rose jointed kind will rust. I was worried about the exposed ball joint part. Doesnt it get covered in sh1t? Thought it might wear the joint out. Also although your steering feel will be real sharp, dont you get a more harsh ride over bumps?

Willio I can honestly tell you the steering is 100% fantastic wink.gif,Like I said Johnny at GPS drives loads of Zs,and it was the first thing he picked up on when he drove it.The ball joint part is covered in grease and it seems fine, looked at it today when the shocks went on.

MAC

Why whats the difference? More responsive, or does it actually make you have more traction around corners?

Stuart BOTH! when they were fitted I could not believe it was the same car you can even ajust the wheelbase if you want,Like today when the Koni jobs went on an amazing transformation.

From TT Tims post 14-09-2001 also explains fitting

If anyone's worried about corrosion on the rose joints, rally design & demon tweaks do boots to cover them - I had to put them on my gear linkage in the 205 because it kept siezing.

They also sell the rod end bearings (Demon Tweeks) if anyone is feeling adventurous enough to make a set of their own up.. (Paul, Smithy?)
