INSIDE EDGE OF TYRE WORN BARE ?

Hi,

just had a puncture on a rear tyre, had a look at it when off and the outer egde was worn and the inside edge was worn to the braiding, causing the puncture.Apart from the tracking could this be a symptom of something else?

Cheers

Inside edge wear is usually excessive camber, outside edge wear can be caused by excessive toe-in. Both are adjustable (to varying degrees) on the rear.

Could also be too low a tyre pressure causing the outside edge wear (coupled with the normal camber of the wheels) - what pressure do you run at?

Hi aaron,

Thanks for the response I try to run them at 36 psi.

That should be fine (psi wise).. So my best guess is that you have a tracking & camber issue on the rear... Try and find a reputable alignment shop who can do laser alignment - and preferrably know how to adjust the rear camber..

Mark, sounds like you've deffinitely got a rea tracking problem - my guess is the rear toe in is way out...

When I first put my 18s on the car went through a set of rears in 1500 miles frown.gif When I checked the toe in it was at 22mm!!! Stock is 0-4mm!!! So £340 later I re-aligned the rears and now they're on 4000 miles with no evidence of any serious wear at all smile.gif

The alignment can be messed up by a knock to the rear wheels but is easy enough to re-set....

Andy's right

Mine was the same, 8mm toe in yet worn inside edges on the tyres. Combination of negative camber and too much toe in. Mine had had new Hicas arms and I guess no one thought to advise the previous owner to re check the tracking. Also notice much less likely to spin the wheels now but maybe thats cos there's tread on the tyres.

Just as a follow up.....

The official spec is 0-4mm toe in - I set mine to absolute straight, ie 0mm. I found this gave me AMAZING traction off the line in the dry but then the traction control took over in the wet... Rear toe-in gives stability but also wears your tyres so its your choice... I'd go with the dead ahead method and enjoy the fun to be honest....
