TAILGATE LOCK NOT TURNING

Hi All,

my tailgate lock barrel does not want to turn to unlock the tailgate that easily, is this easy to access and service or is a replacement barrel to fit the same key easy to get, and is it a Nissan Dealer only part or can I get it from elsewhere, any ideas?

Cheers

First off, try a some WD40, get a can with the straw in the nozzle, put the straw in as far as it will go then spray, slowly bringing the straw out. then put the key in and out the hole a few times, to get the WD40 around the splines, spray again, and maybe they will be free(er), usually work as salt tends to get into barrels at this time. Especially if the little flap thingy is not there.

Sorry if you tried that already

See ya

Having suffered the exact same thing and advised others in the past on the Aus forum I can tell you the only permanant fix is to remove the lock barrel and disassemle, clean grease and refit. The odd thing though is that the problem is caused by a surplus tumbler in all cases,it the first one as the key enters the barrel, under normal instances it remains unused but if it does move (?) it locks the assembly up and the key cannot release it,I have pondered if this is a cute Nissan anti thief device that prevents the barrel been forced if someone attempts to open it without the correct key.

When disassebling the barrel watch out for the little spring behind the key flap, its a bit fiddley but if you allow an hour or so then it should be done ok by then.

It`s been some time since I did the last one so if I have not detailed it enough here let me know and will dig out the post I did on it before.

Two problems spring to mind here - the first being the weather conditions wink.gif Was the lock defrosted fully???

The second problem is the cork material inside the barrel deteriorating over time and blocking the hole up etc causing untold troubles....

You need to remove the lock then remove the barrel and clean everything, reassemble then try again.... If no joy then just de-lock the rear wink.gif

You should never lubricate a lock with anything runny or sticky if you can possibly avoid it. Graphite powder is the ideal - if you can get ahold of it. Not only does it stop you putting oily, sticky keys in your pocket, but it stops the lock collecting furry, dusty smeg that makes it difficult to turn.

the WD40 trick did it on our drivers door lock. Beofre to lock it you had to turn it so hard it felt like the key was going to break, smooth as silk now though.

I had that problem. My dad looked and found that the lock was not properly held in. I dont know exactly what he did but he told me that he just tightened it up or pushed it back into the clips. That sorted it out. I will ask him when I get home from work

Hi all,

thanks for your ideas so far I'll give them a go
