Was just wondering mate, how does tuning the Zed to such a high level compare to other cars such as the Skyline and the likes. I know the excepted wisdom is that the skyline can be tuned easier blah, blah and all that, but what is the reality in your experience. What could you get for the price you've paid out on yours? and how would it compare power/drivability/cost-to-maintain wise. Dave

Well Dave after attending TOTB 02 I wanted to make a serious powered 300zx and fly the 300 flag for TOTB in the RWD class. The car was meant to be there this year however for reasons way out of my control it did not happen. I don't think that there is any one that has taken a 300zx to this level in the UK to date.(hope I am not the last)

We are still only half tuned yet and the car is already making great headway and even as it is at this stage running 18psi on a basic map would destroy most things that came into its path. The car goes through the whole gear box in a few hundred yards you only stay in each gear for around 2-3 seconds before it bounces off the 8k limiter, and when those turbos spool at around 3kyou just get pinned to your seat!

What could I have bought instead? Well almost any thing within reason a good Skyline would not even cover my engine build LOL it’s not about money though it’s about setting out what you want to do and achieve your goal. The car is every thing and more that I was hoping for even at this stage. The rate at which it passes other performance cars is just incredible so running 30psi it should be out of this world;)

not as fast as my new car!!!! ave some of that mac

Its all about how far do you want to go??

To get to say 500BHP then its fairly easy in a skylark and not so easy in a zed but when your talking 6-700 bhp then it starts to get expensive on any car.

You get the likes of Keith Cowie and he's got near 100k under his bonnet and it has to be rebuild regularly as his is mainly used for drag.

I think if you want a car thats not too expensive to tune up to get good results then i would say a supra is your best bet...ugly but very tuneable

With regards to the zed, both me a mac were doing similar things but i got burnt with my new turbos which never turned up!? where as mac carried on regardless lol as we both wanted a high power zed over here as theres none around at the moment

Yea and I cant beleive you threw the towel in you even had the Border fuel rail:(

As for more big power Zeds in the UK there are some big builds going on as we speak

Chris Nelson,CJ and Russ are joining the Greddy/pentroof combination;) Also Jaffa and Karlo are doing big builds so I hear;)

Will be great to start seeing zeds back on the scene amd showing what they can really do !! About time too !!

Yeah completely agree mate, it does my head in always seeing the obvious skyline, supras and the like. Good effort to Mac and others for wanting to fly the flag here.

There seems to be enough Zeds around the world running high power. Its about time people here did. There doesn't seem to be enough serious engine modding knowledge about over here. People seem to get as far as the make it sound/look better/louder/meaner and then stall, not wanting to commit to major engine work. I suppose the fact that its a lot cheaper in the US contributes massively to this state of affairs. There no doubt though if you look on any american (or Aussi/New Zealand) web site that it's possible to do it with the Zed as well.

There are a lot of very knowlegable engine builders over there and IMO they seem to be a lot more scientific about what they do than your average UK enthusiast. I'm really glad theres some people like MAC and Co trying to change this. I just wish you didn't have to sell your granny to do it in this country. Dave

Aint that just true. I'm going for a big power motor this winter, either with the VDG30 or the RB26 I've got. Not decided yet, maybe too much work for the latter? All I know is all the parts for both lumps are about half the cost out here in Canada compared to the Uk and their easily accessable. When I bring the Z home in 3 years she should be a full on monster. She will almost be an antique by then aswell

Must work out cheaper for you to get a Zed there and ship it over here to people? Dave

Z's are still worth mega money out here even in standard spec. see link

Cost of shipping is 500 pounds each way and takes 11 days to get here. Whilst i'm living out here for a while it's a great opportunity to build the Z I wanted. Could never justify the cost in England. Some people think I'm mad bringing the car over here but i'll save about 4k on engine parts. Took me a long time to find a very cleen Z so may aswell keep it.

Fu#k me...im off to canada to sell me Zed

Once I've moved into me house and all settled i'll be importing cars out this way, huge demand for jap cars especially Skyline GTR's. You can sell R32's out here on RHD for 12k!!! I belive you can buy them for about 7k

The MACCA truck I believe

He does need a bigger vehicle to do his weekly shopping!!
