A friend of mine just got herself a Skyline R33 GTS, and while having a look at it last night a few curiosities came up. So, as threatened earlier, here's a few questions on the subject of the Z's erstwhile sibling, the Skyline! :D I'm sure a few of you out there can help the poor lady out (and you can award yourselves... oh I dunno, 10pts per question?!?)

1. Do Skyline's normally have the battery in the small partition between the back seats and the boot? What else is supposed to live in there? The seems to be a fusebox in there too.

2. Do Skylines have a safety boost mode like the Z? If so, would a tank of standard unleaded in a japanese mapped Skyline be enough to put the car in safety boost?

3. Following on from 2, any idea what the standard boost levels are in the R33GTS? The stock boost gauge is the same as the j-spec Z's (-7/+7 mmHg), and hers sits at around -2 at idle and rises to about +2 or +3 at WOT. That doesn't look good to me, and to be honest I can't feel a push from the turbo like I do in the Z. Having said that, the Z has an extra turbo and 50bhp on the R33GTS, so does that account for the differences??

Finally a couple of general questions (same points value :D):

4. There's a box in the engine bay, about the size of a double CD (y'know, two CD cases stuck together like the old Playstation games) covered in japanese writing with a Raybrig logo on it. Since Raybrig make bulbs, what the hell might this box be??

5. Is a turbo timer that doesn't allow you to lock up and walk away until its timer runs out (and always activates even if you only switch the ignition on and don't start the engine!) incorrectly fitted, or just a peculiar example of a turbo timer!

And thats it =) I know it would probably make sense to take this post to Skyline group but I just figured it might make an interesting change of topic for a while :D

Cheers guys

Questions 1 to 4 - dunno

Question 5 - I thought they all did that, my Apexi does!! Does this mean I can get mine set up so I can get out, lock up, set the alarm etc. while the engine runs down?

Q1 - All the GTS Skylines I have looked at had the battery in the back so I reckon its standard.

Q2 - I was told they have a safety boost feature, can't confirm this 100% though

If I remember any more I'll post later.........

re: the tubby timer, mine does that, blitz fatt, cos i havnt been bothered to get the little module for my alarm yet (toad do a extra module that makes the alarm wait for the tubby timer to finish and then locks itself)

Only a highscore of 10, maybe 20 points so far??? Come on you lot, don't think I can't see you all reading this!! :D

Ta for the t.timer info - I'd assumed that all of them allowed you to lock up and leave, as I'd been reading up on the Clifford systems that work that way, like Mowgs' Toad.

1. Yes all r33's do, HICAS ecu, fusebox and accerss to the fuel tank.

2. The ecu will go into safe mode if it detects to much knock. (disconect the battery to reset this)

3. 0.5 and 0.7 bar two stage boost second stage kicks in at around 4500rpm with the VVT

4. probably hid conversion not uncommon

5. seen lots like this.

a high score I think :)

oh and FWIW running on anything other than super UL (optimax/Tesco 99 prefered) will very quickly kill the engine!

Simon H    Q 5 apexi tub timer and clifford alarm no you have to wait but it gets people thinkin when you walk away from the car and then blip it over yer shoulder oh and if it has hid,s (fusebox) look at them at night and see if they blind you!!

If you got any more questions then give Garth a call at MGT Racing.. skyline dude...:D

Thanks Simon, great info! Definitely gotta declare a winner :D

3. 0.5 and 0.7 bar two stage boost second stage kicks in at around 4500rpm with the VVT
0.7 bar is the same as a stock Z, right? So there should be a similar strength push as the Z delivers, just coming in a bit more progressively yeah?

We're gonna reset the ecu as soon as she gets a tank of Optimax in, as suggested, and see if that's makes a difference first.

Thanks again

Raz, tell Sam to sort her pics out!

Bob

don't know much about z's :)

as standard the GTSt is a lovely drive, you get the same response from the engine at pretty much any speed and the delivery is very linear, sticking a boost controller in and giving it 0.7 from the outset puts a much bigger smile on you face though :)

http://www.gtr.co.uk and http://www.skylineowners.com both have great forums - and I do a nice line in carbon sill and boot trims for the R33 ;)
