Exhaust Question?

I recently purchased a "slightly used" after mkt exhaust.

It was of a 91TT and mines a 93TT. Took it to the exhaust shop to get it fitted. Chap at the shop said the back boxes will fit fine, however the middle section would not go on as it was from a 91 model and mine had CAT's there???

Is this correct, and if so what shall i do with the CAT's? Leave them or cut them out and get him to put pipes straight thru?

I know this subject has been visited b4 but....

Any considerations?

im in the same boat if i take cats of anything later j reg it will fail mot the only other solution would be to take the cats off but put them back on at mot time but this is a real pain

Yeah, but did 91 Zeds have cats? 91 is before cats were required, pre 92 200sx's didn't have a CAT. I can't see Nissan putting a power sapping cat on a performance car unless it had to.

Erm you could take the cats out but you'll almost definately fail the next MOT unless you put them back on for the test.

Infact no S13 (89-94) doesn't have to have a cat at all as it's not listed in the CAT tests. smile.gif Which is nice, mine's coming off as soon as I can afford to do it. I even emailed the VIA to confrim that for me, which they did. smile.gif

Jezz.

Yeah what mark said, damn I got gazumpt. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

FYI - my '89 has CATS - it's a japanese car remember.. they weren't legally required *over here*... and the main market of the euro car was the continent - they've had CAT's and unleaded for years over there..

Oh and also - I took the cat off my UK 1994 Renault (which is definitely illegal, no matter how you interpret the MOT manual - jap cars are open to 'interpretation') - passed no probs.. just have to know the right places smile.gif

Earlier Z's have pre-cats aswell don't they???

Do UK spec pre 92 Zeds have cats? I assume yours is an import Aaron.

UK spec S13's didn't have cats until 92.

And what's a pre-cat? Just sounds like more expense.

I believe pre 92 UK's had CAT's as well.. But I could always be wrong.. It has been known.. once or twice.. wink.gif

Pre-cats - they're in the elbow into the turbo (if I recall) - where the O2 sensor is.. designed to heat up quicker and help cold start emissions..

I think these are only on US spec Zs.. imports don't have them afaik - the US guys are often on about buying J-spec elbows..

I aint really worried about MOT's as Dave can sort such things out. What I am concerned about is damage to turbos, excessive noise.......

Also, what is a cat back system ??

Cat-back system is exactly what it says on the tin.. it's an exhaust system from the back of the CATs back smile.gif

Damage to turbos - no CAT's means less backpressure, which does put an increased load on the rear turbo seals.. so if they are starting to leak, it could well speed up the process. a breather kit is supposed to help in this situation (que the debate!) and stop the onset of degradation.

noise - it'll be louder yes.. i know my renault is *very* loud, but then it's an NA, so no turbos.. i know my little 5 turbo with a 2.5" bore exhaust was actually quite quiet because of the turbo.. personal taste, it'll be loud, but it wont be raucus IMHO.. depends on the exhaust too remember..

Cars before 1992, if then have CATs on as standard DONT have to have them on by law. These can legaly be taken off.

Cars 1992 and onward, if the original spec has CATs on, they must remain on by law.

I looked into it

Pre '92 UK cars DO have CATS fitted. I can hear them meowing at me in the morning biggrin.gif Seriously though mine's a '91 UK car and it DOES have them fitted. Removing them would be illegal, but so is not declaring all your mods to the insurance company if you're gonna be that picky wink.gif
