Is it any good? as they claim it will double the speed. Its on www.freebiedirectory.com

All sorts on there.

Coz me laptops only got a 56k modem & more speed would be nice smile.gif

Any good or a load of pants - dont bother?

To tell you the truth, I have no idea of how they work. It is impossible to send and recieve as a speed higher than your modem can go.

What most probably happens is the program makes the most of the bandwidth. By making the Packet Size of the data larger thus less over heads. But I think they TCP has a set package size so I coulg be talking out of my arse there.

It also is some sort of route finder, finding better faster connections to the data you require.

I have never used on so I am not sure how effective they are.

Stuart

I have never

I think they use compression.

It's used on ISDN a lot but not so much on modems.

If you get the dialin status up when you are logged on it tells you what compression data is being sent/recieve at.

I dunno if web accelerators work though.

They are crap, as Stu says its impossible for a 56k modem to send and receive any more than its design and the cronky old twisted copper allows.

They work by caching everything and even pre-caching, ie they see a hyperlink on a webpage, assume you may visit it, go fetch the page whilst you are reading the current page and hey presto its cached and loads quicker.

If they could make the modem quicker then the software writers would be very rich indeed smile.gif

:)

I have read that most download managers DO log what you are downloading to their home site as well as to your local PC, so if you're into online privacy the're a no no !
