OK, before reading this there are a couple of things I need to point out.

(1) This is a rant.

(2) Probably in about half an hour I'll have calmed down enough to see the funny side of this, but this doesn't change the fact that right here and now I'm incandescent with rage.

(3) Probably in about half an hour I'll have realised there are much bigger problems in the world and that there are plenty of people in worse positions, and I'll count my blessings... but this doesn't change the fact etc....

Right so I've just tried to renew the road tax, oops sorry, I mean vehicle license, on my zed. I tried last week to do it online but it couldn't find the MOT record so I couldn't get any further. No biggy I thought, I'll do it next Friday when I've got time to go to the post office.

So today I duly went into the post office in the city centre (and queued for around twenty minutes) with all my documentation, only to find that I can't. Apparently this is because the MOT certificate doesn't have the vehicle registration number on it. In the box where it should appear it simply says, "Not displayed". Nice.

Now there's a bunch of questions that one has to ask after this. Firstly, why does the smegging registration number matter when the chuffing VIN number is on both the MOT certificate and the V5, and the V5 also has the registration number on it?!? But far more importantly than this, if it's really necessary for the registration number (which let's fact it could be applied to anything and need not remain constant throughout the lifetime of any given vehicle... unlike the VIN number) to appear on the MOT certificate, how on earth did this car get taxed in the first place?

Now at this point, the lady in the post office implied that perhaps I might have nicked the tax disk from my previous car and stuck in on the new one. I managed not to blow my fuse, which is quite amazing, when really the only sensible response to this kind of provocation is probably something along the lines of, "Don't be so bloody stupid and impertinent!!!", because under the new rules, (i) I would definitely have been fined by the DVLA for not declaring the vehicle SORN, (ii) I would definitely have been pulled and busted by one of the numerous cops that this car seems to attract, (iii) the DVLA wouldn't have written to me to tell me that my license was due to expire at the end of July and needed renewing.

So now I have to send off everything (V5, registration certificate, insurance certificate, MOT certificate) to the DVLA office that registered the car, and get them to send me a tax disk, which could take up to 5 working days (or possibly more given the complications that have arisen). They will add the registration number to the MOT certificate. Meanwhile, I can't use my car because the tax expires on Sunday.

I'm left pondering the question of who's the bigger idiot: the dealer I bought the car from for not getting the registration number added to the MOT certificate, which I think he should have done in the first place (still don't know how he got it taxed though), or me for not checking that it had been done months ago when I got the car. Grr.

Anyway, I've slightly calmed down now. If you've managed to read this far without dying of either boredom, or laughter at my expense, I'm impressed.

Cheers,

Bart

I hate taxing my car at the post office.

They always pick holes with my doccuments etc and I have to go and get different things and keep coming back etc.

They're not so fussy when handing out massive Giros to all the chavs who hang around there drinking strong lager and comparing pit bulls. They all get a hand out, no questions asked.

My Registration number is not displayed on my mot certificate.....and I got tax disc for it at Post office (she just looked at the Vin numbers instead) , and she got the reg number of my Insurance document to write it on tax disc.

I think a lot of Imports are like this, as they are often MOT'd before they are registered.

...but you probaby did'nt want to hear that :headvswal

Take the docs back to the post office and just go to a different person at counter.

Beurocratic b*llocks again aint it, the good old un-united state of

U.K

................................. And if you hadnt have been wearing that burberry track suit it would have been sorted!

Maybe the rules have changed but when I first imported my car I had it MOTd before it was registered, they put the chassis number in where the Registration usually goes and I had no problem taxing the vehicle, I can understand you rant though, it ridiculous.

You're probably right... but maybe I'd have pulled it off if I'd taken along the pit bull as well.

Nah, that's OK. Might just try a different post office tomorrow morning - there's a hardware store just up the road with one so I'll give that a go... and if it doesn't work I'll just send everything to DVLA. I think the woman there today was just particularly belligerent and unhelpful, so it might work if I go elsewhere.

I would go back to the Post Office, demand to see a supervisor, then ask when are the staff being trained on the new forms!!

Cheers guys. Tried again this morning at a different post office, and got it sorted. This time they just cross-checked the VIN number with the V5 and gave me the disk. Hurrah! Would complain at the main post-office but it'll be a 20 minutes queue so probably not worth the effort. :-S Thanks for the advice, and for putting up with me venting.
