If you still can't find it - you could try Demon Tweeks - they can get pretty much anything if all else fails..

It's really difficult to get ahold of. I've given up on it and gone back to a trade oil that is both cheaper and comes in 5litre packs. Of course it's fully synth too.

Well I did say if all else fails smile.gif

However, give them their due - they are friendly, and helpful on the phone.. And will actually *look* for stuff you specifically need rather than just "it's not in the catalogue, sorry" (like when the guy spent half an hour sourcing replacement kevlar dumpvalve diaphrams for me)..

Well anyone who sells Castrol oil can get it wink.gifPS don't be fobed off that they no longer do it and the new one is 10/40,because Castrol do two RS fully synthetic oils smile.gif.

try this number 01204 578129 his name is bernard he gets it for me no problem at all....the only thing that bugs me with castrol rs is the fact when you do an oil change you have to buy to tubs of the stuff as you can get it in 1 ltr bottles and i always lose the tub i have with a couple of ltrs left in it but me thinks my sneeky father may have something to do with that lol

Sorry to be a dunce here but could you expain what makes 10W60 good? I don't have a clue where to start choosing the oil for mine.

Thanks,

Phil.

10 means that it is quite thin this is measured at 20'c then the 60 means that it is thick in this case this multi grade oil is at 20'c it is the same viscosity as a 10w oil but 90'c the oil is the same thick ness as a 60 w oil would b at 90'c

the higher the number the thicker the oil

probably confused every one now cos i ant very good at explaining things doh.

I cant give the exact technical answer, but it goes like this:-

The first number is the lower temperature vicosity, if I remember write 10W means it good for -10 degrees C, without changing viscosity. The 60 relates to the higher temperature, and is the temperature it maintains its viscosity.

I would go for a 10W60 on our cars due to the high engine temperatures under the bonnet, and the twin turbos. This will ensure good engine protection through a large temperature range. You should also find very little oil consumption as well.

I use Shell Helix Fully Synthetic 10W60.

Whilst the temp under the bonnet is high, this does not automatically mean that the engine temp is high. I would expect that the oil temp would be close-ish to the water temp, given both have radiators and both are cooling/heating each other. I don't have an oil temp gauge, but perhaps someone who has can verify how close they are. The water temp in my car is typically 80-84C, so just to play devils advocate, do you need an oil that behaves as a 60w when it's hot ? If it's too thick then you can get oil starvation because the pump can't shove it around fast enough. I think one of the reasons people go for thicker oil is that it 'looks good' on the pressure gauge (which is quite innacurate - especially when the sender is tired) and frequently reads alarmingly low on a hot engine at tickover. Incidentally, the Nissan style oil pump does not generate high pressure at low revs, like say a Ford pump, but it does when spinning faster. Nissan publish recommended grades for the oil and it varies depending upon the ambient temp/conditions. Obviously there will be variations in conditions between say Alaska and Arizona but I would have thought we are somewhere fairly safely in the middle. Unfortunately, I don't have the handbook that lists the differnt grades to hand, but I use a 10w50 and I think that is a broader range than is specified by Nissan for our environment.

OK the Nissan reccommended SAE viscosity ratings for varying temperatures are;

For -30 to -10degC, use 5W20 oil (not reccommended for sustained high RPM)

For -30 to +15degC, use 5W30 oil

For -20 to +15degC, use 10W oil

For -20 to +40degC and above, use any of 10W30, 10W40 or 10W50 oil

For -20 to +40degC and above, use any of 15W40 or 15W50 oil

For -10 to +40degC and above, use any of 20W20, 20W40 or 20W50 oil

So there you have it.. That's what the 'book' says..

10W60 weight oil is way too thick for normal road use in a UK winter.

You will lose some hp and you know how much we love our hp. Unless you are going round Silverstone at full tilt all the time stick to the grades advised by the manufacturer - 10W40 or 0W40.
