Russ only introduce one fish at a time, then the filter has time to adapt to the biological loading, it seems to be ok.

One way to test it is to introduce a lot of fish that are hardy let them innoculise the filter take em out and introduce the rays?

how do you manage to keep your water temp down in this weather mine is sky high, and should'nt your nitrate be lower?

thanks for the advice, have been, just a couple of cichlids, 2 weeks later the arowana, now its 2 weeks and hopefully the first of the rays, as to keeping it cool it is in an aera that does not get any sun. it peaked at 28.8, but the tank seems to do everything slowly. as to the nitrate, think I may have to do 2 water changes a week, 200 litres of water :headvswal , poor ro machine aint going to last long

Hi Russ,

Like Mark said, introduce stock in small doses (like you have been doing) to allow the nitrifying bacteria to adjust to the increased levels of ammonia and nitrIte. How long has the tank been running? A new tank will not be completely "cycled" and set up for at least 6 months (especially a large tank like yours) so pay very close attention to the levels and fish behaviour. As for your NitrAte level, don't think that is anything to worry about. It is the least "poisonous" form of the Nitrogen cycle and anything close to 10ppm is acceptable. I've had my tank up and running for a long time now and my nitrAte level is stable at 10ppm (all other levels are spot-on zero).

Good luck with the introduction of your rays! Any chance of a pic or two of the current setup?

All the best,

Dan

the tank has been running six weeks, thanks for the advice

afew pics of the tank, has to be basic for the rays, and a pic of the one I should be getting

That's a big tank Russ! That will take some time to get settled - good luck. Here's a pic of my "minimalist" setup. It's a lot smaller than what I'd like but at the moment it's all I've got space for (it's only 60L). Still, for entertainment and theraputic value you can't fault these little creatures!

All the best,

Dan

like the tetra's I'll post some pic's when I get the rays

got my first, a pretty little girl. ,here is a few pics

Nice tanks you both have. I keep marine fish, hard work but worth it. I don't know much about fresh water coz I jumped in at the deep end and went straight for marines so it was sink or swim lol. There are some good forums online for fishkeepers if you need any help or advice.

Chris.

have you got any links?

cheers

  • 1 month later...

now the tanks done, thought I would post a pic of it, christ is it hard work, but worth it, sorry for the bits in the water but they have just been feed

I used to use RO but then found out it removes absolutely every protein from the water, so you have to use an RO additive to put them back in??? I forget what its called but its something like RO+.

is that right?

switched from RO (was using for about year), back to tapwater with tapsafe conditioner, and not lost a single fish since.

yep, run on ro 75% and tapwater with tapsafe and a buffer down to 6.5 p.h 25%

seems o.k, twice a week 150litre water change, nitrates 20ppm. if I leave the water change over four days nitrates 50ppm, after that

can some one with more experiance tell me if my tank seems to running o.k, before my rays go in

The RO removes 99% of minerals and pollutants from the water, you have to replace the minerals with a mineral additive to restore it to something similiar to what is found in nature.

Russ is that one solitary discus I see in your tank?
