You're not wrong. I was just about to post on this! LOL

Basically:

Only six cars are taking part in the US Grand Prix after the teams failed to resolve the Michelin tyre safety row.

Twenty cars began the parade lap but only the non-Michelin teams - Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi - completed it and took their places on the starting grid.

The other 14 withdrew to fans' cries of derision, and missiles were seen being thrown onto the Indianapolis track.

The safety row began when Toyota's Ralf Schumacher's car crashed on Friday after a Michelin tyre blow-out.

Michelin recommended their teams didn't race as there was a problem with the tyres on this circuit and due to the new rules the teams can't swap tyres so they're stuffed!

Teams asked for a chicane to be put in on the bad corner to slow the cars but Ferrari wouldn't agree.

So 6 cars set off! LOL

What a firkin joke!

A race that started with only 6 cars..

Michelin can't make tyres for sh*t (well, we all knew that already  ) and declared that their tyres were unsafe at full speed round the banked final corner..

9 teams (that's everyone bar Ferrari, isn't it?) decided that if they built a chicane (Michelin's suggestion) before the last corner that the race could go on.

The FIA said no ("Computer says noooo.."), Ferrari said no too..

So they started the race with just the Bridgestone runners, basically.

Feck, type faster Aaron..

F1 top 'men' are too far up there own ar$es, they got $hit in there eyes and can't see things properly. F1 needs to wake up and shake up with all the interfering rules just lately. Let's have big sticky slicks, low downforce, no traction control and 3.5L V12's back. It used to be good fun back in the day.

Rob.

yep, agree.. overpowered non elektronic guided F1.....

As i watched the start I was laughing too :xxx:

cheers,

bs

I'm not sure Ecclestone counts as a man by any definition Rob - not even if you put quotes around it

Although I wouldn't kick his wife out of bed.. but, anyway..

Do you think maybe Ecclestone is the result of a failed cloning experiment?

Maybe there's a full size version of him out there somewhere

"And I shall call him.. Mini Ecclestone!"

Surely the fault lies with Michelin? The FIA no-tyre change rule is stupid, but that's the rule.

Michelin asked the FIA to put a chicane in on the offending corner, but that's unfair to the Bridgestone runners.

The FIA told Michelin they had 3 choices:

a) Tell the teams to run slower through the offending corner.

b) Use different tyres (and attract a big penalty).

c) Repeatedly change the tyres during the race.

Michelin responded by asking the FIA to put a chicane in on the offending corner...

The FIA gave them some options, but Michelin only seemed interested in their own solution. :(

agreed, at the end of the day its michelin's and the teams that use michelins' problem

However

a) Having a large number of the cars suddenly slow down for 1 corner is not safe when there are cars behind them doing over 200mph. Plus how much slower would they have to go? They where not told how much slower was needed to make it safe because no one knew. These are racing drivers they dont know how to go slow through corners. What would happen if Mitchelin said its safe to go through at 100mph, there would be some one who thinks "Sod this" and over take on the corner at 200mph while every one slows down for it. And then every one goes through it at full speed.

b) They can not use different tyres. Which tyres where they meant to use? Bridgestone? I think that contractors, sponsers, Bridgestone, Mitchelin and rules would not allows this. Plus they where not allowed to send in another set of tyres. This rule was introduced for teams who can afford to have a very large supply of different tyres and pick the best from them all against the smaller ones who can only afford to take 2 different types.

c) You can not change tyres during a race any more. Where have you been all season? Only if the tyre has a pucture.

Who are Mitchelin to say how to make the lay out of track? These cars have been set up with every singe inch of that track in mind. Putting a chicane in would completely mess up all the teams stratigey and setups. Plus drivers would have to relearn a track again as entry to the prevuous 2-3 corners could be different as well as the braking point to the preseeding corner would be different.

This is a farse, I agree. But I can understand the FIA standing what can they do? Rules are there for a reason. If you put clauses in there, you end up having people exploiting the clause for the wrong reason and you are back to square one.

Would you not say that it is the best interest of Mitchelin to make a tyre which is good enough for racing? Yes the track surface was a little different than before, but they should not be making tyres which are only just inside the level of tollerance. They should be making tyres which are well in the tollerance level of what an F1 car can do.

They said they wanted to bring a batch of tyres which where used at the Canadian GP. Meaning they made a weaker tyre for the American GP. They took the gamble and it ruined the US GP.

agreed, at the end of the day its michelin's and the teams that use michelins' problem

I think to avoid the whole sorry F**K up  , they should have, maybe as an example, sorted what to do last night instead of all this political *****cks :slap: , gone with the chicane idea to get round the safety concern, BUT, this morning given the drivers say 10 laps or so to get used to the chicane and alter the setups to the cars and say the 10 or so laps would be knocked off the total race laps, therefore no driver/teams would be at a disadvantage....

Seems like a simple solution to me, we know one or two teams might kick up a fuss but everybody would then be in the same boat...

All IMHO of course...

Can't blame the yanks for being p*ssed either, bloody joke

cheers Jon..

The FIA asked Michelin to work out a safe speed and tell their teams. Yes, it's dodgy, but they should just accept the fact that the Bridgestone runners were faster through that corner and stay off the racing line.

Michelin offered to ship in new sets of tyres from France, with a different construction, overnight on Saturday. The FIA said they could use them, but would incur a heavy penalty to discourage anyone from doing the same in future races. Presumably Michelin were happier with their teams not competing at all than with suffering a penalty due to their incompetence!

c) You can not change tyres during a race any more. Where have you been all season? Only if the tyre has a pucture.

Not exactly. Tyres can be changed for valid safety reasons. Apparently that's up to the stewards to decide, but the implication from the FIA was that this would constitute a valid safety reason.

Makes perfect sense, but why should Ferrari accept that? Early in the season they suffered with bad tyre performance and lost a lot of ground. I don't remember Michelin suggesting the tracks should be changed to suit Bridgestone! :nono:

If the other teams were allowed to compete for points after putting a chicane in, Ferrari would be perfectly within their rights to kick up a fuss.

The only solution (other than the 3 reasonable ones the FIA suggested) that I could see would be to say that only the 6 Bridgestone teams could score points and then run the race with a chicane. Even then, there was always the chance of a Renault or McLaren taking out the Ferraris...

LMAO, quote, Martin Brundle 'If Michael Schumacer does a victory leap on the podium I'll personally punch him in the face !'

PMSL quote of the day

I don't think it's fair to lay into Michelin so hard. F1 is about the limits of technology and that's where these guys (and tyre) operate. The diamond cut track was not available for testing before the race weekend - and that's when the problems became apparent. The FIA and Bernie were too slow to react and sort this, there were a whole set of choices available when the problem first became known. Sitting there saying 'the rules is the rules' is mad - they change the feckin rules every year, so what's so freakin precious about them!

Can't blame Ferarri for monopolising either.

They say Bernie Ecclestone is the father of F1, I think we just witnessed him killing off his most famous child on live TV.

He's a pompous git and I'm going to switch to the new series sorted by that Arab geezer as soon as it's televised. (And I've been watching F1 sine the 1980s!)

It was bloody SHAMEFUL! :xxx:  The sport is so big and so high profile that it is no longer just a contest between gentlemen in Bentley's, but a viewer/spectator event, paid for either directly or indirectly by the viewers. There were plenty of solutions out there, and one should have been chosen by THE FIA! The race should then have been run, entertained the crowd/viewers who had paid for it, and they could have sorted out all the regulation violations and penalties afterward. :slap:

Have to agree with all of that.

I thought these daft new tyre rules could cause a lot of problems but never imagined something like that yesterday.

I'm amazed there wasn't a riot after the spectators paid millions to watch that farce. Imagine how those guys felt after traveling across the U.S and internationally to see that pathetic show. One guy said he'd paid 2 months salary to get there and there was a guy interviewed from the UK who'd gone over to see it :(

They should have done something to get the race running for the sake of the fans and F1 as a whole.

They could have given the michelin teams other tyres and start them from the back of the grid or just run it with no points being awarded.

Rules are rules but when they stop the event there's something wrong and they need to make changes quick.

I think they've done a lot of damage to F1 and it was already getting pretty boring anyway.

That new race series can't start soon enough!

TBH, i think F1 is shite!!

Go back to the stupid HP of the 1500cc Turbo's back in the 70's/80's!!

All IMHO of course :)

Yup, I agree!

Unfortunately the Health & Safety brigade, as well as sponsors terrified of negative publicity, and the teams terrified of COMPENSATION claims, are all hell bent on slowing everything down  Still, if yesterday is anything to go by then there won't be any F-1 series worth showing.

I still think that if it's supposed to be the Premier motor racing series there should be a capacity limit, a weight limit, same fuel accross the board and a impact resistance level set.....and that's about it.
