Basically I work in computer support and get phone calls all over the country from people who work for the tote.

How are you meant to give support to people when they know nothing about computers.

For example we changed our exchange mail server and we are talking some people through how to change their email settings to look at the new server.

Got them to the part where they put the exchange server name in and asked one to "type in email underscore exchange"

"where is the underscore button?" I was asked.

"Hold down shift and press the button to the right of zero"

"Where is the shift button?"

"Its the button which makes your letters capital"

"Oh right, which button is that then?"

I had an argument with one user who's computer had to come back in to be fixed because the modem died. She asked what part of the computer she should send back? I said the computer, we dont need the monitor keyboard or anything like that, just send the computer in.

"yeah I know, but what part of it"

"The computer, the big black thing sitting under you desk or under you monitor."

"Oh you mean the hard drive?"

"No the computer, the big black box where all the wires plug into"

"Yeah, thats the hard drive"

"No the hard drive is inside the computer"

"Inside which bit of the the computer?"

"It is inside the computer bit"

"Inside the hard drive?"

FFS!!!!!

In a world now where there are very few jobs with out computers, you would expect people to have the simplist understanding of the things.

ooooooooooooooooo dear. I heard one recorded call once from America. Some guy phoned a helpline and the lady operator wanted him to take the back off the PC to access the PCI cards....."....ok I have just sawn the back off...."

The line went awful quiet..lmao

You are obviously 'ADVANCED' helpdesk......coz as a 'USER' all I usually get for help is "have you tried switching it off and then back on again?" "Yes?, Oh, well, err, without actually being there I can't help you" :slap:

But yes, I agree there are a lot of numb-nuts given PC's to work with. There's one well known one flying around where the help desk bod tells the guy to pack his computer in the original box and send it back to the manufacturer....is it serious?....yes, you are too stupid to own a PC :hyper: :p

i had a good one yesterday . Lady calls up and ask about a product on our website . It went like this:

Customer : im after a battery

Me: no problem what model is it for

Customer : Its not for a model its for a computer

Me:Ok which model of computer

Customer : Its a toshiba

Me:Ok which model of toshiba

Customer : I dont know , isnt that your job ??

Me:Well if we dont know the model of computer we wont know which battery to send out to you

Customer : Just send me the one for the Toshiba ones

Me: Well they use various different batteries so we will need the model

Customer: Well it Windows XP written on it

I just thought FFS !!!!

There are a lot of people who are given a job that, at some point, involves a computer, but they are never given any form of training on what is what or how to use it. There are blokes here who use the computers in this office who manage to **** things up on a regular basis! :slap: :headvswal :headvswal I've never received any PC training ever!!! I've learnt it all on the job, hence I'm not all that good at it ;)

Our IT help take loads of details of the problem when I call them.

Then they say "is it a PC?" (all computers in our building are Macs).

I say: "No a Mac" and they say "Ohhhhhh......"

Then they give a me a problem number and never call back.

Eventually I have to fix the problem myself.

I think my work has not invested in the finest IT support. Whenever I see them they seem to be looking at Buffy pictures or that alien bird of Star Trek on laptops.

I work on a helpdesk too, and i even get lecturers in IT ringing me up asking where the reset button is, and i've had several of the computer = hard drive and monitor = computer instances. Pisses me right off!

When i got ntl: broadband years ago, i needed the modem drivers so i phoned up ntl: to request a cd. The guy on the phone told me to download my modem drivers then i should be able to get online........

Good point... when you get a job as a trucker, they won't just lob you the keys and tell you to get on with it, will they? Yet effectively that's what happens to anyone who is parked in front of a PC on their desk for the first time...

Stu, you should be cursing the people who make the bloody things so difficult to use, not the people struggling to use them!

Computers are not difficult to use.

All that people use their computers for at work are emails, and for company made software which they are trained in.
