Fuel Smell !!!!

Hi guys!

Having an aromatic time at the mo!!!!!

When the car is just started after its been sat for a while I get about 3mins of quite intense petrol smell then its gone!

I would obviously think I got a leak some place but apart from dumpin' a fag under the bonnet to find it I haven't been able to see where its comin' from!

I think I read something in here about a fuel smell in a previous topic but I cant remember what was said or what caused it!

Any ideas, weak areas in the fuel system I should head towards or anyone get the same thing?

Cheers guys!

Some people say that the smell of Petrol in the car when you start is a Z characteristic. My one has just started doing it. It might be because of the cold. If it is really that bad, check the rubber fuel lines in the engine bay. These get very hot under there and perish.

Might I suggest that the reason the fuel smell goes away after 5 minutes or so is that the engine gets hot enough to burn the fuel, so to speak.

I had this and tightened all the clips up and it stopped.

Use liberal spinklings of talcum powder around the hoses and clips and run for 5 minutes and check under the 'hood' for *ahem* damp patches.

Cheers chaps will try the tightening and talc route although I think the only damp thing is the wet sod driving the car - - - - Hang on thats me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check the fuel smells / leaks FAQ on www.300zx.co.uk.

Don't risk leaving it in case there is a chance of fire.

Don't ever use non-Nissan fuel hose unless you are sure it's strong enough. I have seen re-inforced fuel hose that almost burst on my car.

Most common leak is the little bugger of a hose attached to the fuel pressure regulator down near the inlet manifold, will only leak when cold for a few seconds.change the hose and fit good quality clips..

Cheers SYKO as I'm a complete idiot !!!

The part your talkin' about (fuel pressure regulator by the inlet manifold), is it down by the air box?

If it is I think my problem could be self created as I had to remove the air-box and associated bits and bobs to get the driver side headlight out! I didnt undo any pipe clips but it was all hanging out as they say!!

No I'm afraid the regulator is located looking at the engine from the front of the car is on the right hand side at the rear of the inlet manifold if you follow the fuel line from the filter on the passenger inner wing it will lead to the regulator barrel shaped thingy with a vacuum pipe attached as well. I would post a photo but don't know how yet. hope this helps.
