now dont get me wrong, i love this motor, but when you come off a roundabout (st albans one coming to m25 junc to be exact) and you floor it at about 35 when a 330d beemer is slightly ahead of you, im thinking surely a good condition standard zed should waste it surely? Seems not as i was to the floor today and i was struggling to keep up? Is there something wrong with my motor...i dont mind wasting 3 times the amount of petrol but i would like something to show for it!

Any ideas anyone?

my zed never really impressed me as you would all know i have written in loads for advice to what the problem might be, it has been on consult computers and the engine is suposse to be fine, so was compression. the gear box has now gone from a line pressure solenoid fault plus lots of burning from the box, i beleave i have had this problem since i have had the car and am hoping this is what was slowing it down as i had one of those ALC things on and made no differance. everyone says you should be impressed so if your not somethings wrong after all these are called super cars

Scarey isn't it? Oil burning Diseasels that can munch a Z! I don't get it either, 350Z can be slapped by a Z32 but a Z32 can be cained by a diesel. WTF is going on?? :D

Must be a TURBO TIMMY :D

Remember BHP is just the product of torque and RPM, the only reason the 330d has such a relatively low bhp is because it runs out of puff at high rpm... but high torque obviously means its very quick initially with high turning forces at relatively low rpms...... hence you have to work your rev range to give it a good pasting :D which is why we all want a lovely torque curve as opposed to "just" big bhp.... well you kind of know what I'm getting at anyway :p

I cant even be arsed to read through half these posts guys sorry, but I did catch roberts thoughts that a Zed mid-range isnt as good as it used to be.

Thats tosh mate sorry, look at the 350Z, the 300's quicker once the 2-3rd gear change comes through and I have to say, even when my Zed was marginally standard, I was never beaten mid range by anything other than a 600bhp merc....

Something IS wrong with your zed....FACT.. :) Get it dyno'ed....

Or just do a 30-70 mph/ 40-80 mph run and see how quick it does it in.

If you are whole seconds off from what it does when new, (you have to be if you can't catch a 330d) then there is something wrong.

You aren't keeping it stired up enough if a BMW 330d is pulling away from you. They pull quite strongly but not that strong. My Z is alot quicker than my Volvo even when it was fairly standard, but my Volvo eats these things for breakfast.

I think you need to realise that Rob was in an auto, which sometimes doesnt kick down all that well when you need it, and if it didnt kick down well, pulling from 30 would be slow until the boost came in allowing the bimmer a good few seconds head start at max torque.

Even if he had the right gear and the bimmer footed it a couple of seconds before rob, that would have took away the difference in 30-70 that was mentioned and also he would have the big advantage of being in the next gear and pulling again before rob.

I had a similar thing with a 3.0 alfa the other day, we pulled off at the lights, and i went steady didn't think he would race (two lanes into one), he gunned it beside me and i didnt realise until he had pulled past me and his back bumper was at the front of mine, i floored it and was playing catch up by 3 or more seconds, he was already well into the power and I wasnt in the power range and was ALSO trying to catch up. I thought I would have ate him up, but as i got half way through the gear toward 50 and gained back on him ready to pull past he pulled in infront of me and I had to break, he still got ahead of me.

Off the line is fine, in the right gears and going for it at the same time is fine, but if you have the wrong rpm at the wrong time, and another car you sould kill is in the right gear, with the right power at the right time, it will be a lot more difficult than you think ;) a few seconds advantage and a good driver is all it takes to win over a much bigger car in a small amount of road.

Yep there's a lot to do with driver skills and always proactively setting yourself up so he doesn't get the jump on you.

I think cos I've done a lot of proper karting its just second nature. So You hold back alittle and then sling shot into the bend or junction exit so your on the gas first. That way you make the ground as they are starting to get the peddle down and you just blow them into the weeds. :D ;)

Ahhhh the fun of go-karting and not being able to drive back from the track or hold a pint lol!

30-70 and all that were tested with boost and the best possible rpm.

lol, no BM would be catching me, not even a new M3, but then I guess I have more bhp than one, and mines a manual,.I have destroyed, evo's, scoobies, eveyrthing in my Z on the roads, and having owned all of the aforementioned cars, i know what they can and cant do and where there weaknesses lie, cant speak for standard Z's or auto's, but mine is F'in fast, there is a twisty section near me, where I could max 90mph through the apex of a certain corner in my Evo running 363bhp, I can flick through that apex in the zed at 100mph and running not much more bhp at flywheel.

Still much rather have my zed...whenever I see a beemer, it is being driven by a tw@t. They always try to cut everyone up, never pull over when a superior motor like a zed is behind them, so the only option is to bust his ass on the way past...

My opinion...now ghet off that box and get back to work...lol

I was doing it up to 4 years ago. I had to get back into it because my oldest lad was into it and doing quite well in the 2 stroke 125 k series cup. So I couldn't just watch and mechanic all weekend so I got myself a 400 prokart and did the 400 prokart series which was held at the same meetings. I never won because at 14 stone and a mere 27 bhp the you lads would pull away on the straights, but I never came last.
