Toying with the idea of buying an old Golf GL Cabriolet for Lucie. Went to see one today that has been up for sale for the past couple of months with no takers. It was originally up for £700 but has since come down to £500. After talking to the owner it looks like she may drop to £300. It's got some rust around the back, the paint job is very tired and faded, the original roof is in a sorry state and would need replacing, the engine's running a bit rich and there's no service history but, despite this, I'm still kind of taken by it! If there's anything serious body wise that requires welding I have a mate that would be able to sort it out for me. However I'm not entirely sure I should go for it. Has anyone had any experience with these cars? Good points/bad points? Any info or advice would be good to hear folks :)

Cheers,

Leigh

It's a pram ! lol :D

Lol! I know, I know ;) Ideally she'd like a Suzuki Cappucino however we were put off when I enquired about insurance...over £2000! I thought the Golf might be a reasonable compromise. Ok it's boxy but it does have a quirky kind of cool and added pose value with the roof down which wouldn't be all that bad for a first car! ;)

If ya missus is a Hairdresser then the car is perfect! LOL

leave it m8, when they rust THEY RUST, a mate has just gone through a similar thing to buy one for his wife, and he's had a few, i reckon they are starting to look a bit dated, also consider a new roof is going to cost you £300 minimum, for what you would spend on it plus paint/welding etc you can find a really nice one,

(btw my mate ended up getting a tidy escort cabriolet fully kitted and even though it's a ford lol it looked 300% the better car)

on the golf mate , my missus has had a few , they are mechanically quite sound but the electrics have failed on all 3 so far in some form or another!! So mechanically yes , electrically NO !!

She is, and she works with my mom who is also a hairdresser. Your point being?

Thanks for the advice billy and karlos...not so keen on the idea now! ;)

This might be better (although the roof still isn't great):

Don't know where you are though so might be no good anyway.

Or, how about these, er, bad boys:

And this one's just for a laugh cos' I can't quite believe anybody would go to all the bother of doing all that to a car with a 1.1 litre engine (actually I didn't even think the Escort ever came with such a small engine so I'm slightly dubious as to whether this is right):
