DON’T BE BLUE ABOUT THE COLOUR OF YOUR CAR… BLACK CARS HAVE MORE ACCIDENTS

When choosing a car, most people pick a certain colour simply ‘because they like it’ or because they believe it says something about their personality, and celebrities like David Beckham and Cameron Diaz are no different. But who would think that the colour of car they choose could seriously increase their chances of having an accident?

A new Colour Crash Index from Churchill Motor Insurance reveals a direct correlation between car colour and accident frequency, and black cars, like David Beckham’s BMW, are twice as likely to be involved in an accident as cream cars, such as the Auburn 851 driven by Marlene Dietrich. According to Churchill, these occurrences are more to do with the personality and behaviour of the driver rather than the physical appearance of the colour itself.

Churchill’s Colour Crash Index (most likely to least likely to have an accident)

1. Black cars, such as David Beckham’s BMW or Batman’s Batmobile denote an aggressive personality or someone who’s an outsider or rebel.

2. Silver cars, such as 50 Cent’s Toyota or Jesse Wallace’s Mercedes indicate someone who’s cool, calm, and slightly aloof.

3. Green cars can often be chosen by people with hysterical tendencies – just like Mr Bean’s and his accident-prone Mini

4. Yellow cars signify someone who is idealistic and novelty loving, such as Del Boy with his three- wheeled Robin van.

5. Blue cars are chosen by the more introspective, reflective and cautious driver. Cameron Diaz drives a blue Porsche and Nicole Appleton a blue Mini.

6. Grey cars represent those who are calm, sober and dedicated to their work – however Jerry Seinfeld drives a grey Porsche Spider.

7. Red cars, such as Ford Gran Tonrino in Starsky & Hutch, denote those who are full of zest, energy and drive and who think, move and talk quickly.

8. Pink cars are chosen by gentle, loving and affectionate drivers, such as Lady Penelope from Thunderbirds, who drives a pink Rolls Royce.

9. White represents status-seeking extrovert drivers - Britney Spears drives white Jaguar.

10. Cream cars are the least likely to be involved in accidents and denote self-contained and controlled owners such as Marlene Dietrich with her Auburn 851.

Churchill Darren McCauley, Head of Car Insurance at Churchill said, “We spend a lot of time looking at accident patterns and how and why they happen. Clearly the colour of car a celebrity chooses to drive says something about their personality, or how they would like to be perceived, and it is for those emotion-related reasons they are more likely to be involved in accidents rather than the actual colour of the car itself.

Churchill hired psychologist Donna Dawson to explain the significance of colour choices and the behavioural patterns of the drivers who choose certain colours.

Donna said, ‘’Colour is important because it affects both our bodies and our minds. We think about colour all the time in our daily lives, from what we wear to using colour to describe the way that we feel, with expressions like ‘in the pink’ and ‘seeing red’ and ‘feeling blue’. This emotional influence transfers itself to the way we drive our cars. We’ve certainly found some interesting personality traits by looking at celebrities and the colours of cars they drive!‘
