The question is - where do you go to apply for trade plates.???

i assume they are very expensive, and you have to be in the trade, though i'm not sure on the "being in the trade" bit.

They cover you for any car to be insured and taxed, so cant be cheap or every tom dick and harry would have them!! :smash:

You are technically not supposed to use trade plates for imports that have not yet been registered. You are allowed to drive them for MOT or SVA or for repairs for these two. I am certain of this because the question was raised at the interview that was held to obtain the trade plates. They said we could have them taken back if we used them for this purpose. Having said that the police seen to be happier if you have them on!

Finally if you are using someone elses trade plates you need to say you are an employee. Also you are only allowed to drive to a specific destination for a justified reason. For example if you were taking a vehicle for new tyres to be fitted you should not divert to your mothers for a cup of tea! Sounds crazy but they are the actual rules. There are a number of traders who have been 'riding around' using trade plates who have had them withdrawn.

i used to own a valeting company down here and one of my contracts was a local import company, mainly 4x4 and mr2 but the odd zed, i used to have trade plates and used all the time, would be careful using trade plates not regiseted to you as they are very strick, i ahd my premiss inspected by auto fraud department of the cid (police) they then had to write report to say if i could have them or not then dvla told me i could pick them up from local office, whole process took five to six weeks, told 5000 pound fine for misuse
