As an ex owner of a 72 Rover P5B Saloon I got to say its a shame our last mass car manufacturer has gone under.

What a shame they couldnt be assed to make some decent cars to get emselves outa a jam, but there you go.

Sign of the times.

I can't help but feel it's cos too many Brits go to work then spend an hour on the bog reading the paper or don't bother working at all. Our national work ethic just does not measure up.

Shame why ever it happened.

Glad I don't have a Rover or MG - surely this'll knock value of them.

My 1.0 L A reg Metro wasn't a bad car ! :nelson:

Maybe that £80K-odd V8 super coupe thing will be available used for peanuts in a few years. :hyper:

Or be worth a mint cos they ain't made any more! :wack:

its a sad day when this happens, another British industry goes down the tube, do you really think France would stand by and watch Renault go down like that? i think not! why has this country got some inabbility to make thing anymore?

No it wouldn't (France, Renault) , have the ability to mass produce a saleable range of cars, the U.K. doesn't. Why it doesn't is a big question. Was going to give some of my ideas but I'm a commie.

it just typifies industryin his country .. or ratehr lack of it.. what does this country produce anymore? it just seems to be one big service industry.. alot managers not managing anythin in particular... this country is going down the pan.. very quick.

theres no great in great britain anymore and its about time we stopped kidding ourselves that we are a major player in the world.

Hence all teh asslicking by blair to bush... blair knows damn well that we need the yanks more than they need us!!

If it's any consolation the U.S.A. wont be a major manufacturer soon anymore

either. The facts are in order to mass manufacture cheaply you need lots of labour (China), lots of energy (Asia/middle east).Someone in an post reffered to greedy poeple demanding ever higher prices for oil, doh, you aint got any, I'm gonna screw you into the ground. Unless you try to bomb us into oblivion.

Yeah lets call it freedom.

Obvious you have never worked at the sharp end of a car factory

And therein lies the problem, we complain when the goverment

tax's the *****cks out of us, or sticks it's nose in OUR business,

yet the minute anything makes it to the front page of a paper

everyone wants the goverment or blames the goverment for not intervening,

the end of the day rover made shite cars, didnt invest enough in developement, blame the consumer for not buying rovers, but would YOU???

business is all about moving with the times and being one step ahead of the competition, rover wern't even on the same track

 .

I had a rover a few years back, it was a fookin great car

( apart from electric windows keeping going titsup and the central locking packing in).

It was the 800 Vitesse, with the brit (not jap) 2ltr Turbo engine, It went like shit of a shovel when you wanted it to and when you took it easy could manage 40 mpg. For a big car i thought that was great.

I bought it when it was 2 years old and kept it for 5 years with 150000mls on the clock it was still going strong.

When I bought it I was moving on from a MK1 Supra 2.8i which had started to dissolve, I wanted a 4 door with similar performance and was looking at an Alfa 164 3.0 which the motoring press praised at the time as a superb drivers car, tried one an thought it was crap, seen the rover in a local garage, checked the performance specs and gave it a test run and :D :D :D, SOLD!!!!

Gave a 164 owner a shot of it and he was really impressed !!!

Now I know I'll get slagged for liking the rover, but i really coudnt fault it, and I really missed it when i sold it. Nearly everyone motoring press included always slags of rovers ( I always remember the 800 old fart tag), but the one I had was big, fast (not Z fast),reliable (apart from those fookin windows) comfy and pretty economical what more could you ask for.

I wonder If the people who slagged rover had ever actually driven one, and instead of going by hearsay and listening to "those in the know" made up their own minds. I reckon rover would still be going strong today.

Rant over!!

True.

When I worked as a mechanic it was what we did. Maybe i put 2+2 together and made five.

I am constantly impressed by Asian people's work ethics though.

no slagging m8, but your first statement said it, A FEW YEARS BACK, if you read the post in the private quite a few of us said we had rovers and liked them, but they've not moved forward, which of todays rovers would you buy to get the same drive quality as your OLD one??????????

Dont realy like rovers, but dont think they were all sh1te, seem to remember from the days of customising everyone wanted the rover V8 engine.... cant have been all bad can it?
