Guys,

 

Ive got the standard wheels all in top nick. However went to Southampton at the weekend 250mile round trip and just looking at the wheels 2nite and seen the front driver's side has some kind of cracking on it! But none of the others.

 

Only thing ive done in the last week to the car is have it lowered 20mm using SE spring kit and new Nissan dampers.

 

I dont think the actual wheel has cracked, can you please take a look at the piccys and let me know what you think has caused this?

Is that wheel been repainted?? And possibly the paints cracking??

Well i've had the car for a year and ive never touched them as they always been in top nick, but i reckon they musta been refurbed at some point. Im hoping that it is just the paint, weird how its happended all of a sudden tho

Has to be the paint or laquer.

 

My friend OZ alloys for his celica had the same kind of thing.

 

Can't be the wheels surely.

maybe powder coat cracking under new pressure (lowering springs) and if it was a non stop trip the heat generated by the discs wouldnt have helped

From the pics, looks like cracking on the coating / paint. If the alloy itself was cracking, it would be in a stress area, surely - and look as if its coming inside out (I'm no metallurgical expert but...)

Yeah I really DID have a cracked alloy a few weeks back and had to get a whole new set of wheels because the manufacterers of the old set had gone bust, but to reassure you it didn't look anything like that. What you're experiencing just looks like the surface is cracking up. Probably worth taking it along to a place that does refurbs to get it sorted -- doubt it'll cost that much, I've seen prices for sorting out edge scoring (and your problem looks less serious) from £40 - £80 depending on the size of the wheel on places advertising on the internet.

I can recommend Lepsons .. I think they are near to you. They collect and deliver back.

This happened to me a while ago, the wheels had been repainted at some time, then the caliper started sticking, the heat made the paint crack, put your hand on the wheel on your next run and see if its hot, you dont want to find the newly painted ones do it as well.

for your peace of mind i had our NDT expert ( non destructive testing) look atthe pics he says it is 100 only surface paint stress fracture caused by the wheel having to take up some of the flex usually absorbed by the suspension , best solution to avoid re occurance is have the wheels powder coated its much more elastic than paint
