I used to get this on my old PC when I upgraded to XP. To recitfy it I had to boot from an XP CD and run CHKDSK on it or add the harddrive to another PC and run CHKDSK. Sorry, its all a bit vague but its a good while ago now. Diffinately a disk type problem though. In my case the problem was sorted by updating the firmware on my drive controller and it never happened again.

aye it deffo sounds like a hard disk problem - maybe some sectors have gone bad (quite rare tho - but hence the CHKDSK as David suggested). Has your mate installed anything recently (s/ware)?

We get this at work alot (tech support call centre), and as the chaps here are saying, chkdsk /r should sort it, followed by getting windows updates to stop it happening again (HDD firmware might sort too, it's something to do with disk write speeds, I think).

Not likely to be a hardware problem though :)
