Hello guy's. can anyone tell me the probable cause of my z using water ? i have had it about a month and about every two weeks it overheats due to lack of water. when i put water in and flush the system it is perfect straight away for about two weeks. there is no water in the oil or anything so not sure ?

sorry for stating the obvious but you've got a leak somewhere!

You sure?

On a serious note can you see any water that has driped under the car after you have taken her out for a run?

Could be seeping out from one or two of many hundreds of pipes in the Z but if you get no puddles under car and its not mixing with the oil and its not blowing it off under pressure then it could be going two places:-

1) Being burnt in combustion cylinder

2) Leaking on to HOT exhaust or Turbo pipes thus evaporating instantly.

You may also find that it only leaks under pressure so when you get out to look for it its not leaking but when you switch Z off n walk away the heat soak kicks in and that will pressurise the pipes and you may be lucky enough to spot where its coming from...

1) Listen really carefully..if its leaking on exhaust or turbo pipes you will hear it hissing as it hits.

2) Put plenty of smelly anti-freeze in your car and you will be able to smell when it leaks....and it should leave a mucky white trail where its leaking.

3) If you still cant find it then :nelson:

I have spent ages finding my leak and replacing pipes to narrow down the search but have got a leak at rear of engine onto turbo pipes/exhaust so its gonna b a Major job to fix.....O FECK :headvswal

Good Luck

Fill it up get it hot then squeeze the top hose when its running or shortly after switching off - watch your fingers with the fan!!! If the top hose doesnt get hard then its not pressurising and a dead giveaway that its leaking somewhere. Even a pinhole will stop it pressurising and it will only leak when you are giving it some load by driving it. When its ticking over at idle it cannot generate enough heat to really push out water through a pinhole. Especially in this weather.

Also you need to be sure you are not airlocking when you fill it and check it after every journey as you risk warping a head and ruining it totally if you let it overheat

btw keeping on filling with fresh water will also lead to rot as the oxygenated fresh water will corrode its inards, ally heads iron block ally rad, ally heater core.

It needs antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor.

would a fooked cyl head gasket cause this too?
possible although if it were a leak into the combustion process you would be charging the water and it would be running very hot or overheating all the time , as others have said when refilling you MUST use coolant finding leaks is usually not that hard due to tell tale signs

...happened to me and it was the bearing seal on the water pump. Stationary it was ok - moving it leaked. If you've an undertray you should be able to spot white tell-tale deposits...

Carry a bottle of water and keep it topped-up or it'll get expensive.

Good luck

Your breaking the Zed just becuase it has a water leak

Mate I bought my M3 knowing it had a water leak lol, wouldnt just scrap a car for that! Fixed it in a day or two.

Common water leak places are the gasket seal on the water pump (behined the viscous fan) get underneath and see if the crank pulley is wet or has water dripping from it. Other place is the two hoses going into the head, they have two small rubber sections on at the back, get a inspection mirror and a light and check in there.

Also squeeze the top and bottom rad hoses, could be something simple like a jubilee biting into the old rubber and causing a hose leak, or the rad itself.

Check the rad all over to see if it is wet, if it is, wipe it off, and run the car and see where it comes from (making sure of course you have some water!) if the rad is leaking I would remove it and talc it up to see where it is, it could be repairable.

Worst case senario is head gasket, but I would doubt its that.

Other than that, get someone like baggins to take a look I guess if your that unsure.

But scrapping a car over a water leak?

sorry guys its not just a water leak its either a crack in the head or a serious head gasket failure. thanks anyway but if you want any parts from my import tt its in black and the body is really good.

If you do decide to break it and it is the metallic black then I would be interested in the front bumper and under tray.
