BC or BJ

Hi all, over a year of ownership an I am jumping on the increase boost bandwaggon and f*** me has my insurance quote gone thru the roof frown.gif anyway...

I have ordered a JWT ECU from the states on an exchange basis, but what I want to know is:-

Will I be happy just using their boost jets or should I try and find the money for a boost controller.

What are you guys using - controllers (which make and how much) or jets?

Thanks

Martin

ps. hope this makes sense smile.gif

I have been having this very quandry myself (jees is 'quandry' a word?)

JWT and hvsevc4 and a 'what the hell do i tell the Norwich Union smile.gif'

Personally i favour electronic boost controlers, you can set different perameters of boost with a maximum too, also some of the more expensive models will learn your cars boost curve, bringing boost on quicker and smoother, they start at around £200 for asemi decent one, i use the Apexi AVC-R £435.00 expensive but considered one of the best with features and deffo good looks, boost jets or bleeding off on it's own, i think can possibly lead to problems, take control of your boost with a boost controler. Smithy

Either way will work. The boost jets are simple, nothing to wrong and once setup the boost is fixed. It will vary a little according to the weather and so on, but if set properaly to start with is a simple and safe mechanism.

Electronic control achieves the same but in a more sophisticated manner. If working properly as Smithy says it will be better. However, there is always the possibility of misconfiguration and always the temptation for that little bit more boost, "just this once" that could be a problem.

When buying the JWT ECU you will get the boost jets supplied with it although I didn't because I bought mine secondhand.

i myself prefer a boost controller , i have the blitz boost controller

blitid_boost_c.jpg

i like the fact that it is very accurate, and you can controll the boost. i would never be able to drive my car at a preset boost (its to much) i like to drive it on stock and then when i want to run high boost i can.

mr duffman, i was waiting for that biggrin.gif

having looked all these BCs are a little more than I want to spend so for the time being I am gonna just fit the jets.

can someone confirm that the car will still be in safety boost during start up when the engine is cold?

Thanks

Martin

Sorry Martin - couldn't resist that one m8 biggrin.gif The only thing you need to worry about with boost jets is that you're not going too far - you really need an accurate boost guage wink.gif Make sure that the boost spike doesn't go too high or you'll be spending more money than just a boost controller wink.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Martin,

The ECU keeps the engine in standard boost until the water temp has exceeded 59 dec C.

IMHO that should be a lot more, but I'd guess it a Nissan compromise for cars that are driven in Alaska etc. !!

But like Duffo says, be careful and to set this up properly you need an accurate boost gauge and preferably a different ECU chip (just for safetys sake)

thanks for the help guys.

ok, just so I am clear, if I go with the boost jets I will need a boost guage to check I am not going above 14/15 PSI.

if I get a boost controller I won't need a boost guage (although it would be nice) because I will have set the maximum boost to 14/15 PSI.

when working out the cost a guage with pod almost costs the same as a controller so I might as well get that then smile.gif

ps Andy this is with a JWT.

Cheers

Martin

Correct.

Your boost will probably be okay, although you should check it with a boost gauge on

the initial setup, which you could borrow. Then, all you have to buy is the JWT setup.

Some of the cheaper gauges (if you are looking for cheaper!)... are under £60 delivered (from the states), you don't have to spend the 200-300quid like some people suggest.

Boost controllers are great, but you don't have to get one for the reccomended 12.5-13.5psi... if you are going to push near one bar (14.5) on stock setup I'd reconsider getting one so you don't go to high.
