I've been working in the mobile telecommunication and VOIP industries for quite a few years now and I can honestly say that none of the information kept on any mobile communications device (whether it be a simple Nokia 3310 or the latest, greatest smartphone/pda/communicator) is safe from being looked at by the major providers. I've seen demo's of people copying entire mobile phonebooks over the air without the "victim's" knowledge or anything showing up on their phone. Very scary stuff ... This is precisely the reason why so many developers in the mobile industry don't keep numbers in their phones - if there's nothing in there thent there's nothing to see.

 

Next big threat to hit GPRS enabled phones will be rogue diallers (very much like the internet variety) which will dial into premium numbers without the user's knowledge and then erase themselves to leave no trace.

 

In a way it is all very clever programming but when it is used maliciously I'd like to line them all up and shoot them - along with the idiot who invented mini-roundabouts (all IMHO only).
