changes today / new server / e-mail accounts / help needed

These are mostly background changes, but you should notice some improvement on site performance, these are temporay measures until the new server comes online,

1) Banners, these used to be generated by a custom CGI script I coded, it was a cheap hack using perl and was effecting server performance, this has now been removed and replaced with an integrated vbulleting script that does the same job with a lot less overhead

2) rides section, this has been updted to the latest revision, images have been removed from the database and moved to the filesystem, thumbnails are no longer generated on the fly, which saves us a lot of processing power.

New Server

*********

We have finally got some new hardware for this site coming, it will be moving off of the shared box and onto this spec machine:

• SuperMicro case and motherboard

o On-board VGA Controller

o On-board 10/100 LAN Controller

• Genuine Intel™ Pentium™-4 2.8GHz Processor

• 1024MB DDR RAM

• 2 x 80GB 7200RPM IDE HDD

We will be using fedora core 3, mysql 4 and Apache2, This should drastically improve the performance of the site.

E-mail

*****

When on the new server we will activate a new modification to Vbb which we have purchased, this is Vbwebmail, this will allow all SUBSCRIBED members to have their own personal 300zx.co.uk e-mail address accessed via this forum.

Other - Hosting

************

This site has been hosted on my network for over 18 months now, in this time the club has not had to contributed towards costs of hosting, mainly due to my insistance, however as we are now in a better financial position with the excellent contribution made by members and traders alike actions are underway to get a contract in place for the club for a co-lo contract, the cost of this runs to £25 a month and basically as we are spending a considerable sum on a new server this will grant allocated members of the commitee legal access to the server, I don't want to be blamed for running off with the hardware in 6 months ;)

A lot of people approach me and think the site is hosted in my bedroom, I can assure you that we are hosted in an extremely secure datacentre, all servers are rackmount, my company operates its own fully BGP'd 300mbit network, fully airconditioned with 3 phase power and state of the art fire extinguishing gases.

Help needed

*********

I am desperately in need of someone to come forward and help with site development, someone with a good eye for design and colours, a grounding in webdesign would be benificial but not necessary, I can help with the technical side of things, just I couldnt design my way out of a 3 year old art class lol.

Cheers guys, things are getting better :D ;)

lol nah mate, the untold ones are the commitee members running through paper work, sorting out traders, discussing politics, sorting out members problems :D, and all the event organisers and the members who take time to go to meets and contribute to the forum, and of course the traders.

i just do stuff that is fun lol and I like to let people know what is going on.

i can relate to that

Mike

Design wise, can I suggest a competition to design the "new look" for the site.

That way you will get a good idea of what members want to see.

Those who don't feel confident enough with their art / design skills will be more tempted to contribute (no pressure) to a comp.

A final decision can made by the members (voting) when a short llist has been drawn up.

No prize required as the winner will see their work whenever they log on.

Just a thought

Drivin Ivan

Mike..I have no idea what you're blithering on about but thank you for doing all the work..I think?
