Ok technically Auto's are faster, because they take away all human input and does it itslef we all know that, but I will NEVER buy a sports auto, it defeats the object for me, it was so much fun dragging (slowly compared to a Zed lol) other cars in an Astra GTE, pissing over far faster cars on paper, because the dumbasses couldn't figure out how to drive the bloody things right. Made me laugh every time... and is a great feeling when you get it right, knowing you've had something to do with the process other than mashing the right foot! But each to their own eh? :) Manuals are for real men :x:

;)

LOL real ego dick splashes more like

Right where do I start..............................

I had the fast road box conversion done on my Z s few years ago; it was a FANTASTIC mod to have done the car was truly rapid with it fitted.

When I decided to go ahead with my Z project, the auto box I had fitted would have taken the power but then would have worn out very quickly so I decided to go manual, what a big mistake that was!

I probably have one of the best clutches money can buy at over 1.6k(clutch is fine) I then bought a brand new manual box(nothing wrong with the box) But put them together in a Z and the whole car is now ruined IMHO!

Now before you spout shite I drive and have driven a manual car EVERY DAY so don’t even go there about manuals are for men PMSL

LOL how can you say that at this early stage? It could be the worst thing you have done to the car  ;)

Lol! :D From listening to the guys that have done the swap it seems to be a very good idea for what we want out of a car. Sure, there are downsides to everything, particularly when it comes to engines as I'm sure you'll agree ;) but in the end you've just got to bite the bullet as you know only to well, haven't you mate? ;)

so to answer the question do you still have a manual box :)

this isnt a dig but all the dragstrip dvds i have 9/10 are manual! zs included.Doing 7-8sec qtrs so i think a manual is a prefferd choice, not debating which ones better just a chosen method

Anyone know what it is?

album_pic.php?pic_id=79

Think it was on overboost, not sure.

If memory serves me its a small block with a single tub.

But that pic does not look the same, sure the car was a purple coolour.

Did see a vid clip of someone with a small block v8 that was tubbed and was balck, could be this?

but pic look wrong or is it me.

Yes for now Greg, but who knows what will happen;)

Greg true drag cars are auto,I am not on about street cars;)

You any idea how much the custom fab work is gonna cost ? must be ££££'s

we don't own true drag cars we own street cars :P

Personally I like having a stick to throw about, at least it makes me think i'm doing something :D.

Luckily the precedent has already been well and truly set and there are a couple of guys in the States selling everything needed for the swap. As far as price goes, including buying the engine, the rest of the parts, sorting the engine management (courtesy of Dave Walker at Emerald) etc it roughly equates to the cost of uprated turbo's, coolers, injectors etc. The whole project is all down to John though, without him (and his mad genius!) I wouldn't be doing any of this! ;) :D

Exactly wouldnt it be better to find out how Johns turns out first before diving in with yours ?

Teh i saw one if these small block Chevy V8s in a mk 1 escort when i was in south africa,I couldent belive the amount of room there was in there.

He was drag racing in it and it was a Auto.

i've got v8 in my mk1 escort moved bulk head back so there no room for cluch pedel so auto it is better that way to scared to take hands off wheel anyway

would'nt mind one of those tub's though

Leigh I hope you going to fit a bonnet scoop LMAO:D;)

We're not using slim's engine mounts. The engine will be sited lower and further back in the bay.

As I said previously the precedent has already been set and it's a set up that works very well.

It's a much lighter (aluminium) engine than the VG30DETT (a little under 500lbs compared to almost 600lbs off the top of my head); there is better power delivery (for the type of car we want to drive i.e. something responsive through the twisties rather than a straight line "drag" orientated set-up) very respectable low-end torque and tremendous high RPM juice, overall a smoother, more linear acceleration; the parts for the conversion are available and actually suit the Zed better than most transplant cars; the complete cost will be almost the same as taking the plunge down the "normal" upgrade path (it's having optional modifications such as going dry sump that can raise the cost); the VH45DE is stronger than stock (one of the reasons why it's used in the Indy cars as a Infiniti 35A engine), although the 90-93 models are more desirable as they retain the VVT and aren't encumbered by emissions regs, one noted weakness was the cam chain in these years however this can be rectified; "if" someone wanted to make a "straight line" street drag car, then it is also the ideal engine to do this with (as has been shown already in the States); the Emerald engine management should work very well with the set-up (after going over to Norwich, Dave seemed very excited about the project. A thoroughly nice bloke! :)); finally (although there are more pro's) John is a good mate and I trust his judgement when it comes to cars implicitly.

The only thing is the 300zx is NOT a track car and it never will be no matter what you do a Scooby or better still an Evo will make it look silly round the twistys.

Good luck to you fella :)

With the suspension properly sorted the Zed handles very very well for a sub £10000 car. Isn't that one of the reasons we buy these cars Ian? If we all had unlimited funds we'd be off in Ferrari land (with a heavily modded Zed parked out back for the hell of it!;)).

Of course there are better handling cars out there, I'll be the first to put my hand up and admit that, but our aim is to make a fun car that we will enjoy driving for (comparatively) very little money. It's fun and exciting because we are in competition with no one but ourselves.

Yes you are right the Z handles ok for a 2 wheel drive car, I have spend 55k on mine so I maybe could have gone to Ferrari land and bought a second hand one but I have enjoyed doing what I have done to my Z and modded it because I want MASSIVE mid range power and top speed runs.

I would never mod it to be a out and out track car though as IMHO it will never make a track car to compete with 4x4s

If I wanted to to that I would buy an Evo but hey at the end of the day we all do things in different ways;)

Exactly the point I was making and what I firmly believe in mate. At the end of the day this is a hobby, a past-time, something we do for fun! :)

As a closing note, although I never mentioned using my Zed as an out and out track car, funnily enough I found a great site the other day which deals with this exact topic.http://www.zfilms.org/Stories/Z32/index.html

Think you'll find the whole site quite interesting.

Check out his "GTRstalking" experience http://www.zfilms.org/Stories/Z32/2002/02-08/index.html (40MB download almost at the bottom of the page)...very encouraging for all Zed owners! ;) :D

No not at all,I bought mine because of the blistering performance it gave even in (STOCK FORM) rolling at 60mph +.

No other car I have driven has given me that feeling inc.................

My Mums 928 V8 Porker

My Mums V12 XJS

A friends V8 5litre+ Vet.and my very own 3 door Sierra cosworth many moons ago

I know John knows his stuff and I am sure he has thought about this project in great detail however I would still say at this point a Stock Z32TT will destroy a N/A v8 rolling at 50mph.

Fair do's mate, let's put a hold on the debate for the time being :) My bloomin' medication doesn't seem to be working (arse) and I feel too sh1te at the mo to keep this going, lol! ;) Hopefully Johns engine will be here soon so it shouldn't be too long before a comparison can be made.

Cheers,

Leigh.

ok no worries at least its a friendly debate and has not sparked into insults which is cool LOL;)

One thing I would like to ask you at this point is are you thinking Super Charger or just leaving it to pure N/A power?

Always think it's good to hear points for and against and different ways of thinking, as it often brings out new and interesting ideas for both sides :)

Supercharging has been discussed but not in depth. There are Q45 powered Z32's that run chargers, the one that immediately springs to my addled mind is that owned by Albert in the States but his set-up is in a very high state of tune and also running NOS (approx 2000bhp by all accounts!) as he's chasing some sort of land speed record. His car bit the proverbial 4mph (I think?) shy of 300mph during a run on the salt flats over there.

I imagine it will be a case of living with the engine for a bit and assessing the option of a supercharger if it warrants it. :)

Exactly the point I was making and what I firmly believe in mate. At the end of the day this is a hobby, a past-time, something we do for fun! :)
