Advice on Recon turbos plz

Well basically my cars smoking like hell, and my left turbos is blown. So basic question is do u guys think im doing the right thing by getting them reconditioned and im paying 500 quid to get the engine taken out to access the turbos. Once they are accessible im thinking of sending them to http://www.turborepairs.com/ whom are charging 195 quid for each turbo. I've been told if the damage is worse i have to pay more. The mechanic who is gonna do the job says that the job hes gonna do mus be crap if its that cheap. He says im looking at least 300 quid for each turbo. I live in west london near heathrow, so if u guys cud give me any advice it wud be much appreciated. If im paying wot im thinking of its gona cost me 900 quid in total.

The price will range from 200-400 per turbo depending on what the rebuilders replace, The damage is only worse if the comp housing is cracked or fooked in some way which means it will render it pretty much useless, sounds about right for a basic rebuild , they only start going up in price when you want bigger comp wheels or 360 degree thrust bearings etc

your mechanic will only be able to advice of shaft play and possible oil in the pipes thats it , you will not know the extent of the damage if any until there stripped down

mate save yourself the hassle and get some new ones

If i get new ones im looking at like double the amount of money i gotta pay, im a student so its hard for me, reconiditoned turbos r like brand new arent they?

"New" turbos are often in recon housings anyway! and this is ok as I never heard of a turbo forged housing failing! it's all about the insides after all.- the BIG issue with replacing turbos is "who's fault is it if they fail?" - the turbo supplier will blame the fitter and the fitter will blame the turbos and you end up paying twice for the job!
