I'm staring to have trouble gtettingher to fire up. The starter motor just spins and spins. It may take up to 10 attempts to get her to start Any recommendations where to look first?

 

May be a considence, but the radiaio no longer seems to pick up a decent signal (signal booster failure??). Could it be a probelm with part of the wiring loom?

Fuel pump check valve has failed, allowing the fuel to run back to the tank when you switch the car off. When you then come to start the car, the fuel pump has to fill the lines before the injectors get fed.

 

To test:

 

Turn ignition on but don't crank the starter, just make sure the fuel pump primes for 2 seconds, then turn the ignition back off. Wait 5 seconds and repeat. Do this 5 or 6 times to fill the fuel lines back up, then start the car. If it fires straight away, replace the fuel pump assembly or just the check valve. Its on the fuel pump assembly ;)

I am having a similar issue with my new project.. but I have noticed it is only from cold. If the engine is warm it starts straight away.. Is this the same for you?

Andy - would your theory account for poor cold starting? or poor starting all the time?

Sounds completely and utterly plausable even so someone who has just had a rather liquid lunch (I know I should have posted this on the Help and Advice Forum).

 

How do you get to this assembly?

Steve, yeah this could deffinitely be the same for your case - when its warm the fuel doesn't have time to drain back to the tank...

 

To get to it, remove the boot carpet and spare wheel. There's a square plate under there held by 4 philips screws - remove this and you can see the pump underneath. Then disconnect the pipes from the pump and undo the retaining bolts, then lift it from the tank. The check valve is at the top, connected to the pump by a short length of hose...

Just replaced the fuel pump and still no joy.

 

Got out the Conzult and it seem to show that the ECU start signal is not there when you crank the engine. Could this be the source of the problem since it sounds similar to the case study in the PDF file that came with the Conzult.

 

If so, then what would cause the start signal to be missing. Surely if the ECU is faulty then you would loose more than one signal (I hope)

My new 300ZX has this problem and priming the fuel lines as you suggest seems to fix it. Can I just get a replacement check valve or do I need get a whole new pump? If so where's the best place to get parts - online or main dealer?
