Wow, they're pretty mad, those deep sea fish.

Like Ivan says, I bet there's species down there we'll never even know exist. There might even be one that looks like a 300ZX.

cant be deep sea, well not 11km. the water pressure at that depth would be massive and the fish there would be accoustomed to it. if they cam up ere to our pressure they would explode or at least be an awfull lot bigger than they were origionall. If you look at the pics none are ditorted "i mean the fish" and they would be. Its the same as a man going into space with no suit , the difference in pressure would mean bang. I recon they all fakes.

Agree with the first bit. Dont think they're fakes though.

Yeah it's amazing down there - i bet we only know 60% of whats in the sea 'cos we cant get down there too look and it's pretty dark. lol

IIRC its a lot less than 60%. Think an estimate was around 10%

I think the water a tsunami dumps on the land is the bit that was next to it just before not a bit from way out at sea.

The water from hundreds/thousands of miles away doesn't come to the land, it just pushes the bit next to it, which pushes the bit next to it etc and the last bit gets pushed onto the land.

So animals from hundreds of miles away in deep trenches would not end up on the beach???

I could well be wrong and in this case A LOT of water came onto the land. They're interesting pictures but I'm not convinced they washed up on the beach in Thailand.

I dont mean fakes as in fake animals as i have seen one or two of them before. I mean fake as in they are not deep sea. A couple of those photos look like a fish market to me. I find it a little hard to believe that in all the devastation and dead bodies someone managed to find several fish trays and neatly seperated the fish into species in what seems to be a well lit lab and took some photos. mmmm dont think so

Practically right mate ... The movement of the plates displaced the entire mass of water directly above the epicentre. This caused a wave to travel in a circular motion away from the epicentre. Out in the ocean this wave would be barely visible (in fact, the Technical University of Delft - The Netherlands - analysed satelite data and found that the actual wave was only about 30cm high as it raced across the Indian Ocean). In the open ocean the wave's speed would be able to build up to the claimed 500mph (not sure this is accurate though). It is only when the wave encounters shallow waters (ie coming closer to a land mass) that it starts to slow down and create a swell (the energy of forward motion has to go somewhere - in this case it causes the swell as the water slows down). This is when the wave becomes a tsunami.

I have read a witness account who was on a beach in Thailand who stated that before the tsunami hit land two thirds of the water in the bay retreated towards the ocean before coming back. The mistake a lot (if not most) people made was to run away from the wave. This is of course an instinctive reaction but when confronted with a large wave on the beach the best thing is to run towards it and dive under it. The force of the water will drag you with it but at least you stand a better chance of surfacing behind the swell. This info is naturally useless to anyone who is not on a beach.

I don't know about the rest of you on this forum but I've been doing my bit for the victims - donated money, clothes, food and my time. It's just incomprehensible what has happened and the amount of people who have lost their lives to this natural disaster.

You'd have have to have been pretty brave to dive into the wave I saw on TV. And I think where it was really bad we haven't seen pictures cos none survived.

Once it got much past the beach it seemed to turn into an incredibly agressive surge rather than a wave and was filled with dangerous debris.

It was terrible beyond comprehension, like you say.

In theory a natural desaster wiped out 90% of the planets life 65 million years ago.

In the late 1800s floods killed over half a million people.

maybee all zed members should donate a tenner . i have already given a lump of doh but would gladly participate and show a owners are not only fast and loud but have good hearts as well. what about it forum runners ? Ill bug my tenner in straight away

What about the victims that no-one hears about?

My lonely Planet books on Sri lanka and Thailand are now practically useless and no-one's given that a thought. I'm the best part of £40 down!!

Seriously though, yes, I have given moneyto help those who suffered in the disaster - I think most people on here already have.

You should read about them.

Look up the angler fish. The males mate by grafting themselves onto the female, so they are basically consumed and live inside the female. Each female have have half a dozen males living on her.

Similar to humans then ! :nelson:
