Judder When Cold

when my zed is cold it starts fine drives fine untill i get to about 40ish mph then it judders like mad i can feel it through the seat not through the steering wheel as you would if my tracking or balancing was out (i have checked them they are fine) after about 10 mins of driving when it warms up a bit every thing is fine the judder is no longer there. wheel bearings are fine as well. tyre pressure is fine.

i cant think of what it could be as i am not technically minded enough to take it all a part and find the fault.

Almost certainly propshaft support bearing requires replacement.

As said many times the bearing will be just fine, however the rubber locater that supports it goes very hard and this prevent the two piece propshaft from "free floating" to a true central point. The rubber will be harder when cold hence why it appears to get better after use as when it warms up there will be more flexability.

Eventually if left the rubber will break away completly leaving a huge amount of free play which will give the impression that the problem has gone away ( no vibration ) but will often be replaced with a banging noise as the drive is taken up or on overrun

( more evident on manual gearbox), also the extra movement is not good for the gearbox end shaft/ seal, best to get it done soon as.

Err..just to butt in Jeff-Do you need any special tools to swap the bearing-ie pullers??

Cheers. :)

No nothing special, once the prop is split in half there is a 27mm nut to loosen off, it has a lip on the edge which is knocked over to match up with a groove in the thread to act as a nut securing device, this can make it a bit hard to undo without an air gun.

But a large breaker bar will do it, you will need to lock the prop from turning so it is easier if an assitant can hold it down, best way is with a long pry bar through the coupling.

The bearing assembly will need driving off the taper seat, again without an air chisel it is a bit harder but a lump hammer and a cold chisel will get it off without any damage to the shaft.

However upon re-assembly be much more careful and gently tap the bearing as far as it will go then pull it down with the securing nut, oh and do not forget to knock over the nut retainer as mentioned earlier.

To be fair the job is not technically difficult, what tends to be the biggest problem you will face is the exhaust nuts and bolts, if they come off ok all will be good if not that can slow the job down immensely.

Good luck.
