My 1990 UK model has developed a fault on the Speedo outputs - they tend to cut out, resulting in the speedometer reading zero, the odometer stopping, the wrong output going to the speed sensor etc.

I've had someone look at it and measure the outputs - they can't fine the fault...anyway, I've managed to source a replacement UK Speedo cluster.

I've been told that to fit this is a doodle (Ha! I've heard THAT one before)....does anyone have experience of this?

Yep, it is a doddle, even if you have mixed parts from a Series I & Series II then all you have to do is swap the instruments in the case.

Anyway, have you proven that it's not the speed sensor output, before you change the speedo - that could be be a symptom, not the cause.

Cheers Andy.....no I've not specifically checked the output sensor, but the fact that so many functions are affected...speedo, odometer...power steering (naturally)...gearchanges (auto box)...would this still indicate output sensor?

Zedworld ran the car and measured outputs from the back of the cluster (yes, you can tell I am not THAT technical, eh?) but couldn't pin down where the fault lay.

How easy is it to check the output sensor?

I also had an 'interesting' discussion wuth a Nissan dealer about 'adjusting' the reading on the cluster I want to fit. He was adamant that it was illegal...I said how could it be illegal to adjust it to show the verified mileage of the vehicle to which it was being fitted? I appreciate that to sell a car with an 'adjusted' mileage is illegal...but if the mileage is being adjusted on a speedo prior to fitting and it is adjusted to reflect the figure that the vehicle has done...perversly he said he would happily fit it if it was a new speedo and had a zero reading!!!

the fact that your gearchange and powersteering have problems would suggest that it is the speed sensor, all these functions rely on the output from this sensor. as far as replacing it/fixing it goes, not a clue mate... sorry :mac1:
