what else would need to be done

and why not advisable

if you up the boost the stock chip may not keep up with the demand for fule, and your engine will start to det.

Then you have to go crying to the traders and get a rebuild and become the bank managers best friend.

thanks def dont want to blow engine

looks like upgrade on ecu then

from experience make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing, I didnt, went to someone local to me. Wnakers.....

TIZer - You can do it but's it's very tricky and takes time! Here's my way -

First install the jets but be conservative with the sizes - u can possibly avoid the ECU mods if you are really careful and just want to experiment a bit.

What you need to do is to know what detonation is and check for it at every step. Install jets about 1.1 or 1.2 mm - next pay a lot of attention to the fuel. You need a good fuel - the best RON u can buy - then add a GOOD fuel octane booster to provide a safe margin against detonation. In a series of tests here Nulon Pro Octane Booster was easily the most effective (but expensive) - I would suggest 1/2 a bottle (250ml minimum) per tank. (Note some Octane boosters don't work at all so without Nulon you are taking a big risk) Next think about easing the timing a degree or two. This should put you in the "safe" range as far as detonation is concerned.

To test what I did was to leave the octane boost out and run standard timing and force detonation so I could safely say I knew what it was and when it occured. (I have a metal fence close to the road here and when I floor it along past the fence I leave the passengers window open - I can easily hear the detonation. A little detonation test like this won't do any harm (don't quote me). What I learnt that was that normally u can't easily hear detonation and I would go as far as saying a lot of cars are being driven around now with detonation and they don't know it. Too bad for their engines - don't be one of those! (Another way is a hosepipe into the cabin and u use it like a stethoscope on the cylinderhead. (But let someone else drive!)

A word on the chips - these are money for jam rally. The blank chip is not worth anything and can easily be programmed with a ROM burner. Also the software is around to examine your ECU maps and tweak them. I have a range of chips I play with. Bear in mind playing with maps requires some expertise.

One of the hardest things is getting the Nissan ROM out of the ECU board and putting a socket in (u can easily stuff the ECU board unless u are an electronics tech - I am - u may not be). I even have a dual socket arrangement so I can run on one chip then switch to another to compare. Interestingly, the Japanese ROMs I've seen are slightly different in that they don't use feedback from the oxygen sensor to tune the mix - these are the race type. I'm told GTR ECU is the same open loop setup.

Good luck with it - my advice - unless u are a tech with plenty of time fork out the money.

Jaques from Oz

Dodgy ground there Jaques ;) LOL

While I agree with what you are saying in principle, I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone without GOOD MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE try this. As for detonation damage, even ONE detonation can destroy a piston, you take your chances you pays the price ;)

WRT retarding the ignition, yes this will massively decrease the risk of detonation, however it will have a drastic effect on torque lower down in the rev range! Overall the car will be slower, with a slightly higher peak BHP - not really much use ;) Good for dyno queens though :D

TV repair shops can easily socket the ECU for ~£5 then just get a chip from someone on here :) John Dixon, Baggins (ZTech), AndyP etc etc etc

Play it safe and you'll avoid a lot of major cost...

All IMHO of course ;)

& dont forget, octane booster is not a substitute for underfuelling!

thanks jaques but a little too technical for me m8
