Just a quick warning against buying unbranded induction kits or universal ones

I saw a very surprising event today, albeit to say it involved a zed that ran perfect at tickover, and when the power was on but like a dog on a trailing accelerator or when on cruise control below 50mph, and cutting out if dropped in to neutral at speed, however would tick over no problem at standstill, cutting it very short the previous owner had fitted a NON BRANDED induction kit the filter was the normal cone shape and looked ok except for been very see through ( metal gauze) on a hunch it was changed for an Apexi one and the problem was completetly erradicated!!!!! even to prove a point I refitted the nasty filter and the problem returned.

Having later looked at the filter in more deatil the internal shape would seem to be the problem and can only assume there was an anomaly with the air pattern into the filter??

So as tempting as they may look universal filters may not be the money saving they look, buy from a trader here to be sure of good quality gear.

thanks for that Jeff. Ive had an unbranded one fitted for some time and seem to have the problem of revs dropping to zero when shifting into neutral while at speed (ive always blamed the bovs dumping). quite funny really as ive got a brand new unbranded filter under my bed (£25 from eBay - point taken :slap: )

The problem is caused by the filter giving too smooth airflow into the MAS. This screws up the airflow reading to the ecu so the engine stalls. Only appears to be a problem when the car is actually moving and the engine is under very light load (ie low airflow). This problem can be 'fixed' by placing something in the inlet to the mas to disturb the airflow as it passes the hotwire. I think most people use a strip of duct tape or something. HOWEVER, do this at YOUR OWN RISK as the cost of a new MAS is not nice and also you really don't want stuff getting into your intake and down to the turbos ;)

Jeff is this colins white one you are talking about ?

Pics show how poor the filtration was by how easy you can see through them.

Its a common problem which Apexi created the funnel at the top of the induction for.

It happens to some people who use K&N too. Its well documented on TT.net. Infact there is a section in the FAQ about it.

I have seen this filter and you could shoot a pee through the mesh its so thin.....
