PTU problem- dodgy sounding after replacment

Hope someone can reassure me here--

The car was running fine, then started to loose power and snap crackle and pop underneath as if the ignition had a problem. The very nice man from the AA rubbed his chin and said it was something to do with the ignition. Not the fuel pump. I tried to start it again, and it was fine, then a mile down the road the same problem. Started it again after half an hour cool down, and it went tits up once again and this time wouldn't restart.

On (much appreciated) advice, I was told it was classic PTU farking up, so I put in a replacment (all by myself with no help from mummy!!). When I tried to restart, it chugged into life but was VERY uneven, with the engine vibrating and the exhaust chugging and popping. It felt like not all the cylinders were firing or something. I ran the car for about a mile or so, and it didn't feel much better then reset the ecu- again it felt very juddery and wouldn't accelerate well. I left it for a bit and tried it again- this time all is smooth.

What I am asking is, is this normal after replacing the PTU? Was the popping unburned fuel in the exhaust? It seems to be OK now, but I am not sure if everything is all right or not- has anyone got any advice? Cheers

No thats not normal. Check the connectors are clean and properly connected on the PTU and coilpacks, also the CAS...

I checked the connections and put my old ECU back in. It starts fine and doesn't seem to be suffering now- thanks for the advice.
