you will find it much easier with air tools failing that you can use the belt method where by you double back a belt on to the water pump etc, right to remove the pulley the only way to be honest is with a pulley puller and NOT with a HAMMER , the underdrive pulley is brittle and will chip etc with a hammer.

Ryan

timing belt wrap

You can do the same method, with a pulley belt, if thats all you have to hand, the point is to sort it so that your movement is tightening the belt against itself

If you remove the starter motor (2 minute job), and get someone to hold a screwdriver between the gearbox housing and the flywheel teeth - this'll definitely stop the crank from rotating when undoing the crank bolt.

Hope this helps

Simon.

And cos I am in a particularly good frame of mind this morning, if you get stuck, give me a shout on 07812-586102 and I will come and help you. :)

would second that If jock as offered to help your in capable hands

I'm sure I put mine in fifth to do it, I think that's what it says in the UD pulley install details too. Maybe that's worth a go

Yep with Jaffa on this bit.

Put it in 5th gear as it take more to turn the pulley that way.

in first you can still (given enough strength) turn the engine.

Anything to mention is that when you undo any bots in the engine you want to use the jerk technique  rather than putting constant pressure on the bolt which may cause it to heat and bend.

The chocking the starter motor is the method i use, just dont forget to do it back up properly, chunks fell off cos i forgot!!!

Also when you take the bolt out make sure you dont lose the woodruff key (a little semi circular piece of metal the size of half a 2p) i forgot this on chunks too and his pulley wheel fell off!!!!!

Did mine without a problem though!!! lol

I love the way you practice on Chunks car before doing it on your own

I did mine first, but mine took me 3 weeks, chunks took 1 1/2 days!!!!!
