I decided that I must have a ZED about a month ago, cant find one anywhere, I am after a tt manual with targa top got about 5500-6000 To spend, is there anything I should look out for when buying, are they hard to maintain and work on, and where do you get styling bits and engine mods from, usual places dont seem to do very much for them(max power, revs etc)

and am I right in assuming all imports are fairladys ? I would appreciate a bit of help!

Yes mate, all imports are fairlady's. Have a look in the for sale

section on the bulletin board, failing that, do a search on autotrader.

Should get a nice one for your budget.

YOu should get a nice one for your budget, but it is worth waiting for the right one. YOu dont want to buy one which gives you trouble. There are some really good ones out there for good money, you just have to be patient and wait for them to turn up.

Obviously a man of taste; welcome! Check out http://www.300zx.co.uk/tech/BuyingZ.htm for a start; manuals I think are marginally rarer than auto's, all Zeds have targa tops, all imports are Fairlady's. Prices are depressed right now so you should be okay with that budget, but keep a grand or two by in case anything big goes wrong, especially if you don't know the car's history. Don't buy the first car you see; look at a few and get an idea of what's available. Ideally take along someone who has a Zed already, for advice. Generally this forum is your best resource; browse the threads or use the Search button; register (a bargain at £20!) and you'll be able to see more stuff. Check out the Cars For Sale section too; the cars are more likely to have been looked after properly being owned by enthusiasts.

I hate to correct you but not all Zeds are Targa tops... but the rest of your advice was spot on :)

First £20 and join here, your going to appreciate it once you get teh car. There are a few stunners on this forum for sale, or at least tehre where and their history is know to one and all here.

Zed are a pain to work on, but then again I think all cars are a pain to work on. Things to check out are the connectors on the engine bay s they throw up the most common faults. The car does have error codes, check the FAQ section and it will tell you how to get teh car to flash its lights for you to show you them.

Not all Zeds are targas. The UK cars are, but there are convirtibles (NA but some have been converted to TT) and there are rarer than horse poo, hard tops.

1 tip when you are looking is to jack the rear wheels off the ground and see if they wobble. if they do the hicas arms are shot. If the car smokes badly out of one ehaust it could be 1 of three things. Head gone (arrg, correct me if im wrong here) Turbo oil seal (not such an arrrg) or PCV valves which too be honest is highly common but a 20 miute fix for about £80.

In fact along with the cam belt change I would strongle recomend you buy the PCV kit and do that.

Dont be put off if the boost preasure guage does not work, or the oil guage. They never do bloody work. (hopefully will come fitted with some aftermarket guages ;)

Thank you all very much for your advice, very helpfull, I will just keep looking around, does anyone know a good insurance company who will insure the car when it has mods? I have two quotes from elephant, One for 620 for an import and 440 for a uk model , but they won`t insure any mods, even a body kit, cheers.

I have Insurance with Admiral with all Mods declared, mine's an Import so no problems there. Very good company in my opinion :)

if you subscribe here you can get club insurance via the trade area with houghtons insurance.

Try Adrian Flux or Hyperformance for you insurance. There are loads of threads on here advising new buyers. It helped me out loads!

tesco did me proud didnt declare mods :(am doin at renewal time though
