Can someone tell me:

a) Is converting inner brake lights M.O.T. complient ?

b) Does the illuminated switch for the fogs have to be on the dash (as oposed to somewhere else, like the centre console) and does it have to be red in colour to pass the M.O.T. ?

Thanks

John

Hmmm. Converting the inner brake lights is MOT compliant and as far as I am aware the switch for the fog lights has to be visible and illuminated, Not sure about the colour though, mine is RED

i wanted to keep the full brake light effect, so i put some red photo film inside one of the reverse lights, all you do is cut a square to size roll it up as push it throught the hole where the bulb goes, it should open out flat inside, and then just re wire one of the reverse lights as a fog. Bingo

Oh it passed the MOT fine with this, you can use a red bulb, i did try one of those really bright LED ones but they only give out a focused beem so no good.

Mine has the inner brake light conversion and it passed its MOT with no problems.

Paul C would be able to help further, I am 99% sure that the switch does have to be on the dash and it has to be illuminated.

If you do a search then there is lots of information on this subject.

Chris P

the switch deffo has to be illuminated when the rear fogs are on

Yep .. that is what I meant LOL .. not illuminated all the time .. :D

Thanks everyone.........I will use the blue illuminated switch for the time being. Maybe Paul C can comment on the colour and the placement of the switch.

Also, can it be wired up in such a way that it can be switched on when the sidelights are on, or does it have to be wired up so that it can only come on when the headlights are on. A schematic diagram I have seen shows the switch taking power from the the sidelight circuit, which makes connecting it up a lot easier.

Thanks

John

mine only comes on with the side lights just pick the feed from the light switch controlls

i have a seperate external foglight and th switch for that is green

illuminated when off, not when on

been through 4 MOTs like that

Hmmmm, isnt that backwards ? illuminated when off..........M.O.T. website states it must have a "tell tale light"

Just wondering......WHY are we so ANAL in this country about bloody fog lights??!? I can't remember the last time I felt the need to use them. All they seem to be good for is for dumbass fukwit women to drive around with them switched on all year FFS!

Are we the only country in the world who have fog? If not, why does no one else on the planet see the need for rear fog lights?

sounds odd but it still satisfies th requirements

the light is an indicator as to whether its on or off, dsnt mean they have to correspond

besides looks better on (switch light not fog) all th time lol

Well I agree with the dumbass people driving around with them on all the time that is for sure.

I think they are useful on the motorways when there is fog present especially since everyone like to speed up in fog (for some bizzare death wish reason). Do you remember the crash on the M40 early morning due to fog? I nearly got caught up in that... fookin scary.

I think they are useful and can help to reduce accidents in really bad weather conditions.

IMO

ok well iv got am iluminated green switch under the steering wheel that i fitted myself and iluminates when fog is on i also removed that ugly fog light under bumper and fitted it the centre panel as my reverse lights went ping and cant be fooked to replace the switch under the gearbox.

as long as it iluminates no matter what colour should be fine obviously you dont want to be fitting it under the seat thats just silly :D

Illuminated switch is a compulsary item, doesnt matter which colour.

SVA states it must be visible to the driver when steering wheel is set straight ahead, in a normal driving pattern, and must be within reach of the driver.

Also it must be marked as a fog lamp switch by either word or character identification. Should not be able to be lit when the side lights are not on.

Cheers,

Damm, switch identification..........what a PITA, I suppose I could temporarily stick a Dymo label underneath and remove it afterwards.

How many people have a switch without identification?

Thanks

mines just a plane switch, Don't think MOT places will remember all the rules about a fog light switch

Mine's a plain switch, too - just bog standard ugly orange rocker switch from RS or Harry's. One of the many things on the "must get round to it" list. Been there 5 years now :D ......

Mines just a plain red light up rocker switch from Motorworld. It's currently wedged between the drivers seat and the centre console until I either a) remove it all or b) do the job properly. Passed the MOT though.

Mine uses the inner brake lights and is wired up to the front fog switch. Like Gio, mine's been like that for over 5 years and I've always meant to change it to a separate switch, but I've never got around to it. ;)

The MOT guys seem happy enough with it though.

Mine uses the inner brake light conversion as well and is wired up to a rocker swith on the dash to the right of the steering wheel.

My local motor factors do a switch kit that comes illuminated, with a choice of press in coloured lenses, ie, green, orange, blue, red etc,

Also in the kit are about 4 or 5 different emblems, ie, front fogs, rear fogs, heated rear screen, etc. Not too big or clumsy looking. Got mine underneath the clock.

The beauty of the Zed is that when you take it for an mot, they are quite rare and things like that can be overlooked anyway. ;)
