It's absolutely brill, I love every minute of it!

I've done about 6 hours flying but I'll be 'in circuit' as they call it, i.e. taking off & landing next. (if the weather gets any better that is!!) Can't wait.

Has anyone else on here done any or got their PPL or own a Microlight (flexwing or otherwise)?

I've attached some pics, the first one is of Formby, second is of an island off the Wirral & the third is of North Wales.

Sean that's cool as fook man! Where are you learning and how much does it cost etc.

More details dude.

P.S. sorry mate spelt your name wrong on purpose so I could +1 my post count! LMAO

I've got a 45 min microlight flight on the 16th Oct. It was a prezzy from the wife. I think it's going to be a fixed wing - does it get cold up there????

My Dad's doing his at Bickerton near Chester, but he went out to a North Wales one a few times... He's buying a flash 2 alpha when he finds one... might see him at your club sometime - name's Ray!

Rich

:) Looks bril.

A while back I heard about a guy who waved to his wife and kids and lost some fingers in the fan right behind him! So mind an turn the fan off before you wave to anyone :)

Fookin network, I just wrote a long reply & the net falls over! It's the 5th time in a week the network has gone t!ts up!

The details of where I'm doing my flying are here

http://www.wlms.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/westlanc.htm

Lessons are £80 an hour which isn't bad considering it can cost £50 for 20 mins!

Just found out that you can do them in Caernarfon now though, so I might do them there instead. It saves on driving all the way to Southport only to find that it's called off due to sh!t weather.

I've got 2 hours flying tomorrow if the weather improves

So how long is the course mate?

I might enquire into doing it at Caernarfon, at least if you're gonna ditch you've got a good chance of being able to swim back to the airport!!! LOL :D

Got some gliding lessons for chrimbo other year , wot a buzz. recommend it to anyone , nothing like catching a thermal and rising upto 3000 feet in a matter of minutes .

You need to do 15 hours minimum before you can go solo. Basically you need to be able to take off & land perfectly every time before they'll trust you to fly on your own. Once you can do that then you need to fly a further 10 hours on your own.

I took off & landed a few times yesterday, the instructor was well impressed especially as the conditions weren't brilliant  Rekon I could take off & land on my own now, wohoo!

Never thought I'd say this but it beats driving the zed!

I've got 18 hours towards my PPL. Haven't got a lot of time to do it at the moment but will be getting back to it in the new year. Have done gliding and chopper flying as well and can vouch for their "buzz" inducing qualities :D Good luck with your training!

Danny

I fly paraglider and paramotor. Paramotoring is the lightest form of microlight and is the cheapest and easiest way to get into powered flight. Kit is £5,000 or so new (less second hand) and training can easily be had for less than a grand. Some people even teach themselves (I wouldn't recommend this!).

If anyone wants any more info, drop me an email (don't come on here very often).

Wow, that picture is ace!

You were brave going through clouds. Mind you, it's probably safer with a paraglider, you can easily get disorientated in a microlight, end up upside down or something! & isn't recommended.

I went up through a gap in the cloud and the gap was getting bigger so it wasn't quite as brave as it looks. But it WAS awesome. You're right though, you can't go upside down with a paraglider unless you try REALLY hard !

Looks wicked, something i've always wanted to do, are there any limitations with me being colourblind?

shaun: nice photos, i especially like the way the thing is held together with duct tape :D:D

  • Author

So long as duct tape isn't holding the wing together, Lol.

I'm not sure what the score is on colour blindness TBH, I know that they're pretty relaxed when it comes to medicals, so you'd probably be OK.

I found this on a microlight website, not very conclusive though:

(F) Declaration of Medical Fitness

This is a simple form that you and your GP must sign – all it states is that you do not have any medical condition that would preclude you from obtaining a licence. The requirements are pretty much the same as those for driving a car. No medical examination should be necessary, and many GPs do not charge for this declaration.

ah thats cool :D

as long as it isnt like my driving test

me: "i'm colour blind so please don't use the colours of cars as directions"

him "ok..... could you please read the number plate of the green car next to the blue one"

I did always want to join the RAF, but they use a lot of colours i cant really see very well :).

cheers shaun :D

Hi Shaun.

I started microlighting at the back end of 98 but I never got my license as we had to sell our RANS. But it was such a buzz and something that I`m definately going back to. I had about 16 - 17 hours in and was solo after about 7 hours (give or take a few mins.) I don`t know if you have to do 15hours dual before going solo as neither myself or my younger brother did. I think he did about 11 hours before his solo.

Anyway. Wait till your first solo......you`ll LOVE it!!!! Everything happens quicker when there`s only you in the plane from take off run to rate of climb etc. It kinda caught me by surprise!!

Theres nothing like it. Its not like the first time you go out in a car on your own. Its much better and scarier as you can`t just pull over at the side of the road. You`ve still got to get the thing back on the ground!!!

As I said its something I`m going back to and i`m maybe going to do a bit in Australia when I head off on my hols on Friday.

Lifes hard!!!

WilliO.

The FAN?? Is that for keeping you cool??? I prefer a prop myself! LOL

I did some engine failure situations away from the air field yesterday, quite interesting! At first I didn't quite get it but when I did, it was no problem. The instructor said I did brilliantly! Not sure how I'd do if the engine was really fooked though, lol.

The instructor rekons it'll be 4-5 hours before I go solo  absolutely can't wait!!! What a feeling of freedom that'll be :)

Was it stalls or emergency landings. I love practising stall situations. Its like being on a roller coaster.

  • Author

We did stalls a few weeks back. The blade 912 is such a good aircraft that it's difficult to get a decent stall from it TBH, but I managed to get a few good ones ;)

This time I had to get the aircraft on the ground safely in an engine failure situation, i.e. know the wind direction, find a suitable field, check for power lines etc & then use the beats method to lose altitude. Good fun.

We're doing unusual attitudes next, should be interesting! That really will be like a rollercoaster ride!

For some reason I didn`t enjoy training for emergency landings. Are you in a syndicate or do you have you own plane. My father has just signed up for a share in a newly built RANS. (Fixed wing with a cabin to stay warm in!) I haven`t flown a flex wing yet but my younger brother is training on a Thruster (I think) and he says its better fun than a fixed wing.

  • Author

At first i couldn't get the hang of the system for losing altitude, but once I grasped the concept I was OK.

I haven't got an aircraft as yet, I've been flying the school's. I'll probably get something like a Mainair blade 582, you can pick them up for about 6-7K.

You're one lucky person having access to a 3-axis microlight, I'd love one of those but it's the cost/storage etc.

One thing that I do like about the flexwing is that you can land just about anywhere with it & at the end of the day you can pack it up & store it in your garage.

The hangerage costs and the insurance were the main reason that we sold our Rans and are buying into a syndicate. Its £2000 up front and £40 a month which isn`t bad as that covers maintenance, insurance and hangerage. The only extra to pay for is fuel.

I take it you`ve been told the old classic line-

`There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots` :)
