Would you like your car fixing, or 'fixing' sir?

As the title really. Take your car to a garage, do you want the problem masked (yeah it'll run and everythin but not how it was designed to) or would you like the root cause found and sorted? I know which I'd go for but then I'd like everyone elses opinion on this. Maybe I've been wasting my time sorting peoples cars out when I never realised people would be happy with a bodge at a much higher price...

Well I certainly wouldn't be happy with a bodge job even if it was a lower price. I would want it fixed properly.

Defiently fixed properly,

A freind of mine had an mr2, a previous owner fixed a stalling problem by playing with the idle, it resulted in him having a bill for nearly £1000 when the real problem surfaced

Actually Andy have to agree here have seen a few cars now where in order to make the car tickover this has been set at 1krpm plus as you say once the tickover is lowered to where it should be there lies other problems , this is usually due in part I think to garages not understanding or been able to find the route cause so setting tickover etc a little higher is there cure :nono:

Root cause found would be nice. If anyone knows anything about garages not fixing problems properly it's me. Most of them can't be arsed but still want to take large wads of wonga off you! Mind you, I can't see anything changing over night in terms of customer service and value for money.

Yep a few people have probably had the same as me.

When I bought my car the guy said that there wasaproblem with Idle and he took it to a garage who sorted it.

the car was running at 1krpm.

After dropping the revs at idle it was all lumpy and kak. The high idle was masking the real problem. Values were all fooked, a short time after compression was so low the car would no longer start.

So I'd go with the expensive fix rather that the cheap mask.

Mind you, I can't see anything changing over night in terms of customer service and value for money.

Have to agree thats why Ztech was set up :hyper:

Stu you've hit the nail on the head there. Unfortunately some garages seem incapable of anything more than a quick service and don't want to take on larger work (probably a good job really). They still want their money though so mask up the problem with a dodgy 'fix'. These 'fixes' often cost way OTT and most of the time will cause the underlying problem to get worse, possibly resulting in major failure...

Maybe I am right in the way I approach things then, just not the norm which I don't understand. If you're gonna do a job, do it properly or don't bother at all.... IMO of course :)

Andy spot on mate

more often than not the major work from these service garages is subbed out to the cheapest bidder which generally means care and attention to detail are not the primary concern :slap: its a real shame that so many of the garages that work on these cars either charge stupid amounts of money or do a second rate job , or both.

there are a couple of very good garages/mechanics who seem to deliver good results time and time again with good pricing but these are few and far between.

Ryan

Has anyone noticed how many 'independant specialists' are springing up?-Deffo round here anyways, and they seem to do a good trade-mostly people from franchised garages getting p!ssed off with how they run things!-so they

start up themselves, doing a good/proper job!-good luck to em' I say-Do it right, you will always have customers!! ;)

the thing is il have a go myself! if it ****s up my mate will do it whos a a brill mechanic! if that fails it will go to z tech for eg.. to many people pay top dollar for *****x end up paying a higher price in the long run.

take for eg.. i had a water leak!! got the car up on ramps, made by myself and fixed it myself! where as if i took it to joe bloggs who has only had 2 customers this week, then my water pump is fooked my rad is leaking thermostat is ****ed :nono: so sod that pay for the job to be done right the first time

If im desprate, i will go to a garage to have it "repaired", then fix it myself, or at least check their handywork during my own time.

Thats one of the great things about this place, you get good frank advice that costs you nothing. I was going to plug my turbo water hoses due to a leak, but thanks to the advice on here, i will spend one more day on it and save myself blown turbos.

Likewise, I (and im no mechanic) thanks to a bit of coaching from mac, mr duff, and tonyc to name but a few managed to do my own waterpump with relative ease.

Id recomend anyone with a problem to throw it up in help and advice, this place will save you £££'s

yep i agree with you guys i would like my car to get the TLC she deserves and then a battering(with plasters) from a mechanic with £££ on there mind.

thats why i took it from london to andyduff because duffer works magic on the Z :)

thanks andy for taking my car on.
