I was going to try an aux. batt in the boot for ICE, but I was worried that the alternator couldn't cope.

Any thoughts?

A second battery in the boot will not affect the alternator. You just have much larger reserves of power and will find the car starts quicker and the ICE can pull more current - reducing the light dimming effect (and therefor clipping) of big bass. Get a gel battery for the rear from an audio specialist if you can - often lighter with more power for the size. I had one that was the size of a standard family car battery but with 4 times the capacity of a double size lead acid thing. Have the added advantage of not leaking when split - if someone runs into the back of you or you have an accident do you want a bucket of acid on the back of the head? Make sure it's securely fastened down, has a serious earth and is correctly fused too. The power from a couple of batteries will weld/melt a hole through the chassis in seconds!

I had 2KW RMS of amps running from a Rover 220...

You can accidentally leave your lights on for longer too!
