I had a massive crash on my puter the other day which resulted in its death...I have resurrected it but now get a prob with this bloody pop up thingy (see pic) and others!!.

Am running latest mcafee virus/firewall on Windows XP and formerly think I had a virus which is what must have killed it. (dont know how it got on here.)

I started from scratch again so think that any gremlins should have been deleted.

Tried Ad aware(latest update), spybot(as before) and of course done a full scan. found a few things but it keeps comming up...oops, theres another one just popped up.

Do I just need a pop up blocker or shall I let it meet with an unfortunate accident?

Any help will be appreciated.. :(

Or just disable Messenger !

Have you put XP service pack 2 on ? It's well worth it.

I suggest that you stop your Messenger Service, and disable the service. You will have no use for it.

Got to the Start Menu, Select Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Scroll down the list until you see the messenger service. Right button on the service and select properties. Select disbled from the drop down list and also click on "stop" whilst you are there.

I'm worried that your "firewall" is not blocking these messages.

"I'm a fraud. A poor, lazy, sexy fraud."

its downloaded itself to your default download directory (might be under windows somewhere) as i use download accelerator so it asks me everytime something is about to get downloaded for which i have setted up my own default directory. you have to find the file from you default directory a from which you have to find it a delete it manually. i had a similar problem. damn pop ups. :)

Thanks...I dont know a lot about theese things but get by.....

The firewall is new mcafee and up to date, tested it via their integral check through http://www.hackerwatch.org which says all secure so there is probably something lurking on my disc somewhere even though scans by latest mcafee and the other spy/ad ware dont find it.

I thought XP was supposed to be good (it is better than 98) but am dissapointed with its security issues. I guess there is always someone who will try and compromise it though.

I have done the update (thanks mike) and for now I dont get a message from sara who has just turned 18 (bit disapointed now!) so somethings happening.

Question...would this be resident in the puters memory or is it sneaking past the firewall ( I only have outlook/explorer and mcafee/windows updates as allowed thru the firewall)

Thanks again....

its not a virus really, its just a command that you can issue

net send blah blah blah

updating the messenger service closes that hole, you should always go to windowsupdate after installing a PC, SP2 is ok security wise actually, the average clean install of an XP box is compromised within 18minutes of being installed if not updated,

Wise words mate - and if any of you guys are running an "unupdated" Windows, don't! I have to do tech support for some of our customers and the number of times we find the problem is caused by some f***wit not RTFMing... The latest one said "I had a pirate copy of Windows installed in the Middle East and it wouldn't update correctly. So I bought a real copy of XP Pro and upgraded because I couldn't be bothered to do a fresh install. Now my IE isn't working properly so it must be your fault." :mac1: :slap:

If you have OS glitches, do a fresh install and update before anything else. Anything else is like bypassing your knock sensor so you can turn the boost up!
