mtl Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 I'm interested in it. just price wise etc. as i may know a few people that would be interested too. Quote
Craig David Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 I live on a new estate where they used the wrong cables so no-one can get broad band until 2008. Loads of people are crying out for it but I dunno if you want loads of people getting involved. Quote
MAC 1 Posted September 2, 2004 Author Posted September 2, 2004 Oh, I'm sure he does ! ;) LOL,If there is enough interest then he may become a trader  Quote
mac300zx Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 What sort of bandwidth are we talking about? 2mb? 4mb? Quote
pete shrimp Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Whats the deal with Satellite BB? Is it expensive? And do you need to buy any extra hardware? STTTTIIIILLLLLLLLL cant get normal BB where I live  Quote
WillieO Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 How does it work? I know that the quad lnb thing for the sat dish has 4 gizmos so that 2 or 3 can be used for sat tv and 1 for sat broadband but that means the down link is fast but the uplink has to still squeeze down a phone line cos it surely doesnt get beamed back to space. Jay Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Mmm. interested but Ive heard P2P doesnt work with satellite. Sharing progs such as DC++ will not work? Quote
Gio Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Hallo gents - it's me ok ok finger trouble oops sorry - left it in 'cos I liked pete's response :D Quote
Gio Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Hallo gents - it's me :p I wanted to offer a deal to subscribed forum members which is why MAC put this thread to see if it was interesting. The deal is any forum member who subscribes to us will get a free month. And if we get loads of business, MAC will either get a cheque from me for the forum or break my legs. We will shortly be doing two way via satellite but this is not going to be cheap. What we are doing at the moment is phone line one way and satellite inbound. WillieO is right. You can have it stand alone - just a dish pointed at "our" satellite (eBird at 33E). Any normal dish / LNB will work for this. And a data receiver (we do two types: USB and Ethernet - and you can also use an internal one). You can upgrade a Sky dish with a Duo LNB so you get Sky from 28 as usual plus us from 33E at the same time with no interference. P2P will work fine but bear in mind you will not get any outbound benefit as you are sending via the phone line. (or ISDN) Data receiver USB or Ethernet is £149.99 inc VAT and the service starts at £19.99 per month. You need normal internet access as well - so you can keep your existing ISP, email address, web host etc. We can give you free PAYG on a local call rate no if you want. More services soon. The contract is one month minimum commit so you're not locked in for a year. If anyone has any more qs I'll do my best to answer either here or via pm/email as you prefer. Cheers Guys - and thanks for the opportunity, Mac Quote
davido140 Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Ooooh the competition! One of the things my company supply is sat broadband, although its very much a corporate thing and a bit pricey for most home users, list prices are £2500 for the antenna, transmitter (BUC) and reciever (LNB) and the indoor unit which is essentially a little NAT router. Link speeds go from 512kb down 128kb up for about a grand a year all the way up to 2mb down 1mb up for about 4.5k a year! pricey yup! slow kind of, whatever sat solution you get its gonna have a 700+ ms latency (delay) cos thats how long it takes for your microwaves to get up to the satellite and back down to the base station (its a very very long way!) :) I seem to be spending a lot of time in eastern europe installing the things at the moment! Guest Timmy_Turbo Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Broadband went into the exchange just as I moved out of my last house and we're due to get 512K March next year at my new place. Sounds like a good deal though Gio. Sure it will do well. Good luck dude. Quote
davido140 Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Hi Gio, do you use a spectrum analyser for finding your satellite? I need a new one as mine is rubbish, which model do you use? Quote
Gio Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Hi davido140, any professional digital speccy will do (and there are also a lot of ropey ones still out there with the installers). And mostly our installers cheat as they align the dish on Sky at 28 and then hey presto thanks to the magic of 3D geometry, our service is automatically aligned on the other feed. Quote
davido140 Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Guess I'll have to try to have a play with another model, the one I have does the job but the screen update is really slow (not like some of the fancier ones I've seen before) as we use a variety of different satellite and most of the installs are in the middle of nowhere I dont even have the good old sky dishes to go by as a starting point for alligning these bloody great 1m dishes!!! :) i've found its very easy to miss the damn things entirely cos the screen updates so slowly! Cheers Dave Quote
