Just had a good old rummage under the bonnet of my mates 3000gt, was surpirsed to see that the turbos were flipping tiny little midget things, dunno if anybody else here has had a chance to see one of these cars. Please tell me my stock tubs arent this weedy! :rofl: seem to recall having a larger unit on all my previous tub cars (silvia, rover, sierra cossie) .....

 

Also spotted he had an HKS BOV on there, "wheres the other one" I asked, nope only the one?? both tubs lead to a Y pipe and a single throttle body, not being an engineering genuis (more of an engineering retard) I always thought a v6 would have two?!?!?! one either side of the V? seems an interesting way of doing it, why not just have one fook off tub rather than two little ones??

 

just curious and all that and keen to learn more about the principles of all this stuff before I take a spanner to my car and fook it up good and proper!! :)

Don't know if those on a stock Zx are any bigger?

 

But when the designers of the ZX were developing the engine they chose 2 smaller hybrid tubbies rather than one big one to spool up quicker and give better low down response.

 

Big turbos give better BHP and top end performance but can be lousy for low down grunt.

if you have stock tubbies mate they will look like two small wallnuts somwhere at the bottom of your engine bay

 

i suggest you get some 18g's or GT30's :hyper: :hyper:

Yup, stock tubs on the 300 are pretty small too, they're only 25's afterall.. That's only a wee bit bigger than the T2 that's standard on a Renault 5 - but we have two.. Two small tubs will spool up quicker than, and produce more low down torque than one large tub. Which brings me on to...

Nope - the majority of V engines, certainly a few years back, had a single inlet manifold - it just feeds 6 cylinders instead of 4.. No different to one inlet feeding the four cylinders on an inline engine ;)

 

If you put one turbo on a V engine... what would you do with the exhaust gasses of the other bank? ;) Sure, you *could* pipe both lots of exhaust together first, but then your turbo would be half way down the car :rofl: you'd have hideous power-sucking pipework on the exhaust and intake side of things, quite apart from the fact that every speedhump would rip it off..

 

Inline 6's (Skyline etc) quite often switch to a single large turbo because you can (at least, it's generally accepted that you can) get more top-end power out of one large turbo than two small, at the expense of low-down power and spool times.

Cool thanks guys, and strangely enough it all made perfect sense to me! (thanks for dumbing it down to my level!)

one day, i've pretty much blown my budget for the car now, will have spent nearly 8k in six weeks on ownership :) will have to wait until the new year, dont want to spend my emergency money on nice big tubs and some fancy pistons and then have the gearbox blow up on me! (that would pretty much be my luck)

In answer to the first part of your querie....

 

The standard tubs on a GTO (the Jap Import Version of the Mitsubishi ya talking about) are 9b's. The UK version, the 3000GT has the bigger 13g's if my memory serves me correctly. If not Im sure there are a few GTO boys lurking in these pages that will correct me.

 

They may look weedy but they should still see you to around 400-420 horses, a little more on the Uk versions 13g's. :hyper:
