If you have decatted your Z and you have blown your turbo seals a few weeks later can you please let me know on this thread.

I will start I did mine and never had a problem even after three years of fitting.

Well that was interesting as it only happened to one so far.

I de-catted about 6 month's ago and so far so good no probs at all and that's with high mileage as well :duffer:

i de-catted it at about 80,000 miles and had a little puff of smoke. ran it up to 1.1bar to see what would happen and it killed the turbo's. not just seals. the whole shaft now has about 2mm of movement in it on the left bank and about 1mm on the right. oops. it went very well while it lasted though. :o)

  • 1 year later...

anyone else ?

Been decatted for a year, no probs.

Quicker spool-up and increased responsiveness

De-catted on Jan 22nd this year.

Increase in response and sounded much better.

However !

Car wrote off on the 24 Jan due to somebody not seeing me sitting stationery in a line of traffic !

48 miles, no probs, does that count ? :)

Was told by an old trusty mechanic in work, that if you had a slight leak or wear in your seals, the cats might hide it to a certain degree.

Remove the cats and you only hi-light a problem you already have !

Dunno, the experts will put me right probably !

Alan.......

Had my Z for 4 years now, always been decatted and no problems!!! replaced my tubs to hybrids 2 years ago cause the old original tubs we're shot.. Seals ok though!! IMHO all this turo seal faliure is *****x!!! How come it only seems to happen to 300ZX's and not other Turbo cars eh???!! I think it's just unfortunate that some seals have gone on some Zed's and it happens to those who the last mod they did was de-cat!!! A cat will hide a bit of smokeyness and purify it where as de-catting is straight through and that's why it shows up!!!

Well IMHO it also looks like *****cks to only one person had their seals fail after decatt. Surley if decatting caused the seals to fail there would be many more.

On my SWB, i had a full turbo back zorst, divorced down pipes, de-cat, X-link straight thru system over 3500 miles ago, done euro runs, many drag strip runs, track day and fast road driving and not 1 chuff of smoke, from what looks like the original stock tubbys, car has done 55000 miles!!

decatted when i fitted my new tubs had them done with staggerd gap seals

no smoke yet

decatted and smoked.

TBH it smoked about 6 months after from what I recall but I was running 14.5psi with lots of hard driving and the engine was on original tubs at 120K miles.

+ I never let tubs cool down properly :x:

+ I ran it on fully synthetic 0/50 oil (I believe this is very thin)

+ I had no silencers in car whatsover - straight through.

From what I recall when I had the middle boxes removed it started shortly after that.

again it oculd all be coincidence - I wanna decatt my new shortie but am worried about killing seals.

decatted but left the stock exhaust on no smoke, changed stock exhaust to mongoose and started puffing smoke within about 10 mins :(

i wont be doing mine then as i have a mongoose exhaust. does anyone else have mongoose and have done a decat, i'm really worried about doing mine

decat mine about 18 months ago,but not really driven it for 11 monthsbut has been fine, running 15psi but i did have 2 mini silencers in the downpipes to obtain some back pressure,

Have also heard similar.... :)

Have now De-catted second ZX......Had no smoke on the first Z after removal on stock tubs................A little smoke from cold on this one, but nothing major (touch wood), but think myself its a combination factor as mentioned above.....Age/mileage on stock Turbo's and how high you are boosting, plus quality of oils are all contributing factors... :)

IMHO 100% spot on;)

Had the megan racing de-cats fitted in November. I haven't noticed any smoke. I have recently had a pair of silencers cut into the de-cats as the exhaust was too loud. Last Saturday i upped the boost to 14PSI. Fingers crossed....

You say quality of oils is a factor.

Without getting into the whole "which oil is best" I have always used top quality oils but think the fully synthetic may have contributed to my problems.

It would be interesting to see what Zed repair specialist use when they do oil changes as I belive Nissan do a regular oil change with semi-synthetic.

bought car 18 months ago aready decatted and valve timmer fitted.straight through scorpion fitted.I got it new syenthetic oil ,turned boost up to high, buy buy left bank turbo seal gone now saving for new tubs /not stock ones.

Yep, me mate!!! My car was already de-catted when I bought it and it was the original turbo's that failed and not the seals... Trust me the type or make of exhaust you fit will not effect the seals!!! ;)

Yeah mine had a mongoose.

LOL You've based your decision on a big sample there :wack::confused::tongue:
