As some of you know one of my turbo's ceased on the way to Billing last weekend.

It's been on the cards for some time now as they are stock turbo's which have been on the car from new (i.e. 15 years and 80k miles).

I'm hoping that only the turbo's need changing and no other damage has been done. There are no metal filings in the boost hoses and the car still idles fine (although a little smokey from the passenger side).

The car is currently sitting on my parents drive in Maldon (Essex) which is 5 mins from SE (hopefully I won't need to go there after I finish  ).

I'm going to be doing the work myself.

I'm looking at fitting the following:

JWT 530bb's

Weisco forged pistons

Greg Dupee Split downpipes

Nismo 555 injectors

Doolz Twin pop

555 chip for Doolz

I'm looking at doing the following:

Removing the EGR system

Under plenum water hoses bypass

Removing the excess flashing from the internal rear water pipes

I'm also considering:

Removing the hicas

Fitting an NA rear Diff

Apexi Fuel controller to map Doolz with dual MAF

Quite a few of you have said you will help which is great  as I find you always have more confidence working with someone.

I currently have 360ish RWHP and 390ish RW Torque (Thor Dyno)

What sort of figure do you think I will be looking at once this lot is in and mapped up.

Also anyone have any comments about the above set up ?. Any know problems with any of the parts ?. Any reason they won't work together ?

do you need a TT subframe and Diff ???

my NA set up will be going on soon and you are more than welcome to the TT set up if you need them

Ryan

Cheers mate and thanks but I've got a complete TT setup. Its just that I've prepped the NA subframe, Poly bushes, camber kit, ajustable rear tie bars etc.

So i'm going to go with the NA and see how it goes. I think I'll do the TT setup peace meal just in case. I've also ended up with a stock TT engine (no tubs), a manual TT box all extra so I'm giong to maybe fettle em as back ups.

Ok, it's getting close to being pulled now, I'm taking my time and trying not to break anything in the process ;).

All Bling removed, battery out, all electrical connectors are off, boost hoses are off, Oil drained, Coolant drained, radiator off, balance bar removed, alternator removed.

This weekend I'll be disconnecting the PAS, AC, Zorst and dropping the gear box.

Any tips or tricks for the above and is anyone free on the weekend that wants to get their hands dirty :D .

Also I have been told that the escort manifolds work with external wastegates so the turbo's will not fit in stock locations and will need some fabrication work on custom piping, so I'll probably just stick to a manifold that bolts striaght on or remove it from the list altogether. Any other recommendations ?

The GD Inconel Manifold should be a bolt on with the 530BB's

Theres a bolt on the back at the top of the AC compressor which is PITA to get to, i find it easier to have the engine lifted about 4inch off the mounts, then you can get it from up above easier (nightmare from under neath i find).

Gear box is a doddle apart from the 2 bolts RIGHT up at the top of the bell housing, way i do this is get a jack underneath the gearbox drain plug (as this is balance point), then slowly lower the gearbox ALL the way until the engine is taking 95% of the weight....this gives about 2 inch clearance at the top of the box in the tranny tunnel to get at these bolts...i use a 14mm shot socket on a 6in extention bar with a rachet...1/4 inch drive, 1/2 is too fat and awkward to use to get at them.

PAS i just unbolt from the block and leave it hangin there, jsut mind when you are lifting the block that it doesnt snag.

If i can give any more advice then just shout dude, done engine in/out 8 times now!

And she's out !!!!

Very big thanks to MTL and Mike Groves (again :)) for helping out today.

Wouldn't have done it as quick or as well without you guys.

Well I think we can safely say that my drivers turbo is fooked !!! Or as my mum said "Is it supposed to move like that", erm no mum it's fooked LMAO !!!.

Check this vid out (only a meg) it shows what a turbine is not supposed to move like when you test it for play.

http://www.300zx-mods.co.uk/vids/Fooked_Tub.avi (right click save as - 1 meg)

Well it also seems that the clutch I bought this time last year (which apparently could hold anything I threw at it with my current set-up) is also fooked (so that was total *****x  ), it's very badly worn and my flywheel that was skimmed is very badly cracked.

We got the engine out in about 1.5 hours which also included removing the starter motor, removing the prop shaft, dropping the gearbox, removing the inlet to turbo main hoses. Not bad going :D (although a lot of the prep work was done the previous week, i.e. drop the zorsts, alternator off, pas pump off, a/c off, all connectors off, all bling removed (that took fooking ages lol )

We got the plenum and the cam covers off in about 20 mins flat !!!.

Amazing how quick it all started to come apart.

I'm gonna take my time with the engine Greg so it may be a few months befor eit's back on the road.

There was no play in the other tub at all, however there was some minor damage to the blades maybe caused by larger dust particles. I don;t think they are form the induction though, will let you know my thoughts on what they are when I see you next ;)
