Hi,

I am not well up on exhausts (as you can tell from this thread..) Car sounded strange today looked underneath and I have a hole in the pipe just before it joins the silencer - the other side looks like its about to go too..

How many sections are there to the 300zx 2? Down pipes & rear silencer?

How much do the rear standard nissan sections cost roughly?

I was looking at a stainless steel exahust (£120 + £330 for mongoose) which is a bit more than I can afford. Are there any others cheaper (skin-flint alert! :p ) that are any good??

Can I just add a stainless steel rear exhaust system to a standard set of front pipes without any problems?

Also I have a Jap NA and I have read about the cat-less exhausts - would this effect the NA, I know there can be problems with turbo seals on TT's...

Sorry about all the questions!

Barry

Not sure how many sections matey, youve got the down pipes, cats and then a centre section, then the back boxes I beleive but mines been ripped out and all replaced with straight through pipes so someone else can answer that one better.

If its an NA then you shouldnt have any probs decating as long as its pre 1992 otherwise it MAY not pas an MOT, as its against regs (depends how dodgy the garage is)

Otherwise decating an NA usualy helps it decrease heat from the manifold, give better flow and rev more freely.

downpipes, into cats, centre section, then into twin silencers, just (yesterday) replaced mine from the cat back so done away with the centr section with a stainless one, as a result will be selliong my standard silencers to the highest bider !

Are silencers completely seperate or do they have some pipe work? The bit of the pipe that has gone on mine is right on the bend behind the silencer. Just wondering if this is connected to the silencer or the centre section?

Cheers

Roughly speaking standard is left and right downpipes, left and right cats, x-shaped centre section then left and right back boxes. See pic.

I changed my Nissan x-shaped centre section and left and right back boxes for left and right Mongoose stainless. Each side bolts onto the cats and there isn't and centre section. So, yes, you can have stainless steel from the standard downpipes (known as cat back if you keep the cats so you have s/s from the cats back if you see what I mean).

From memory (check with a dealer for up to date) the centre section alone was about £350 and each back box was about £150 - all made out of Nissan spec mild-cardboard. So Mongoose (and other) s/s are a real bargain.

found the price for the centre x-shaped bit alone was (in May 2001) £395+VAT = £464.13 bloody nora. Clearly this was before I found this forum!

Thats exactley why I went for the Mongoose S/S system when my back box went. It looks standard(ish) and sounds nice, and wasn't all that expensive.
